Limited upside
The SET is expected to move sideways-up following regional markets as US bond yields fell further on expectations that the Fed will hold interest rates unchanged in September–October after US PPI came in lower than expected. A rebound in global tech stocks should support electronics and finance sectors. However, as the 2Q26 earnings reporting period nears its deadline, caution is advised for individual stock volatility late in the session. Next week on Aug 17, watch for Thailand's 2Q26 GDP report. Technically, the index remains unclear, moving volatilely within a range while awaiting direction.
Today’s highlights
• US July PPI was flat MoM, coming in below market expectations of 0.2%, which helped ease inflation concerns and boosted hopes that the Fed will hold interest rates steady at its September meeting. This provided positive sentiment for risk assets, positive for consumer finance (MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR).
• Brent crude fell ~2.2% DoD to close at US$87.07/bbl on weak demand concerns after the IEA and OPEC lowered their global oil demand forecasts for this year, alongside a substantial build in US crude inventories. Short-term negative for energy (PTTEP, TOP, SPRC, BCP), but positive for anti-oil plays (THAI, AAV, BA, GPSC, BGRIM).
• The EPPO resolved to use surplus refining profits from July 2026 to subsidize diesel prices by Bt2.40/litre from Aug 16 to Sep 15, 2026, to ease living costs. While supporting grassroots purchasing power, this is short-term negative for refiners (BCP, TOP, SPRC).
• The UTCC reported the July Consumer Confidence Index rose for a second consecutive month to 51.8, driven by "Thai Chuey Thai Plus" measures, improved agricultural prices, and easing Middle East tensions that led to lower oil prices. Positive for commerce (CPALL, CPN) and consumer finance (TIDLOR, MTC, SAWAD).
• Maersk raised its full-year profit guidance for the second time, benefiting from surging freight rates amid global port congestion—particularly Shanghai with 12-day wait times—and strong Chinese export demand. Positive sentiment directly for container shipping (RCL) and indirectly for dry bulk (PSL, TTA).
Strategy today
In the near term, we expect the SET to trade with heightened volatility, with early signs of sector rotation emerging as funds shift out of the energy sector in line with easing Middle East tensions and rotate into groups with lagging share prices or low foreign ownership levels. Meanwhile, US inflation came in softer in line with market expectations, bolstering hopes for Fed monetary policy easing and reducing pressure on risk assets. Nonetheless, the market will continue to watch the final stretch of Thai listed companies' 2Q26 earnings reporting season, which may see a mix of stock-specific speculation and sell-on-fact pressure. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".
Trading today
We view the SET as likely to trade with heightened volatility, with early signs of sector rotation emerging as funds shift out of the energy sector and into laggard groups. A key factor to monitor includes the final stretch of Thai listed companies' 2Q26 earnings reporting season. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:
1. New normal plays — Stocks positioned to benefit from the clean energy transition, production base relocation, and long-term economic restructuring in line with global megatrends: GULF, GPSC, BGRIM, GUNKUL, WHA, AMATA.
2. High dividend plays — As a defensive haven during market volatility and a source of steady cash flow returns, split into two sub-themes: 1) Short-term interim dividend capture, with expected Div. Interim Yield >2% (announcements anticipated Aug–Sep): ADVANC, OR, PTT, PTTEP, SCCC, SIRI, TQM, TU; and 2) Long-term dividend capture for sustainable returns, with expected Div. Yield >5% p.a.: AP, BBL, FTREIT, LHSC, PTT.
3. Domestic plays — Focus on big-cap stocks benefiting from government economic stimulus measures, with share prices still lagging: CPALL, CPN, GLOBAL, ADVANC, TRUE, MTC, BEM, ERW.
Trading ideas: 1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: CPN, KCE, MTC, PR9, AMATA, AP, BEM, CPALL, ERW, PRM, TIDLOR, GUNKUL, HANA, LHSC. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Anti-oil plays — Stocks that stand to benefit directly from a decline in oil prices should Middle East tensions ease: airlines (AAV, BA), power producers (GPSC, BGRIM), and construction materials (SCC, SCCC). 4) Declining bond yield plays — Stocks set to benefit if US inflation comes in soft or below market expectations: MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR.
