Sideways as lacking new catalyst
The SET is expected to move sideways. The market lacks new catalysts, with investors focusing on trading and speculating based on 2Q26 earnings reports. However, the Thai stock market will be closed tomorrow, requiring caution regarding risk-reduction selling near the close, which could heighten market volatility. Upcoming events include the US July CPI report tomorrow, followed on the morning of August 13 by the August mini-MSCI Rebalance. Technically, the index has rebounded, but declining trading value may limit further upside.
Today's highlights
• Brent crude rose to US$87.72/bbl due to concerns over the uncertain agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, coupled with US SPR crude inventories falling below 300 million barrels—a 43-year low since Jan 1983. Short-term positive for energy stocks (PTTEP, TOP, SPRC, BCP).
• The Tourism Minister plans to submit tourism stimulus scheme to the Cabinet by August under a co-payment scheme offering 500,000 rights (Bt3,000/right), expected to launch in October. Foreign tourist arrivals last week grew 12% WoW to 636,000, boosted by school holidays in China and long weekends in Japan and India. Positive for tourism (AOT, BA, ERW, CENTEL, AWC).
• The Prime Minister launched the capital injection scheme, allocating Bt4.45bn to the Village Fund to inject liquidity and break the cycle of informal debt for retail borrowers. This helps mitigate NPL risks and supports short-term asset quality, positive for consumer finance (MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR).
• EGAT revealed data center BOI applications surged past 50 projects, reflecting skyrocketing electricity demand. The electricity demand assumption for this group in the draft PDP is ~8,000MW over the next 10 years. Despite Thailand's power tariffs of Bt5–6/unit, competitiveness remains intact. Positive for power producers (GULF, GUNKUL, GPSC, BGRIM).
• Global average sea surface temperatures reached a record high of 21°C in July, with Western Europe facing severe heatwaves, reflecting the forming El Niño. NOAA expects strong El Niño conditions during Oct–Dec 2026, possibly extending to Mar 2027. Prolonged hot and dry weather should boost beverage sales, positive sentiment for beverages (ICHI, HTC, CBG, OSP).
Strategy today
In the near term, we expect the SET to trade with heightened volatility, with early signs of sector rotation emerging as funds shift out of the energy sector in line with easing Middle East tensions and rotate into groups with lagging share prices or low foreign ownership levels. The market is nonetheless expected to remain focused on the US inflation reading due this week (Aug 12) — a softer print would help bolster expectations for Fed monetary policy easing and reduce pressure on risk assets — as well as the final stretch of Thai listed companies' 2Q26 earnings reporting season, which may see a mix of stock-specific speculation and sell-on-fact pressure. The investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy".
Trading today
We view the SET as likely to trade with heightened volatility, with early signs of sector rotation emerging as funds shift out of the energy sector and into laggard groups. Key factors to monitor include the US inflation reading due this week (Aug 12) and the final stretch of Thai listed companies' 2Q26 earnings reporting season. Our investment strategy is therefore "Selective Buy" across 3 core themes and 4 trading ideas with specific positives as follows:
Trading ideas: 1) Earnings plays — Stocks expected to report solid YoY earnings growth in 2Q26, with strong financial positions. Our Outperform picks are: CPN, KCE, MTC, PR9, AMATA, AP, BEM, CPALL, ERW, PRM, TIDLOR, GUNKUL, HANA, LHSC. 2) Foreign underowned plays — Focus on SET50 stocks with lagging share prices, foreign ownership below their 5-year historical average, and earnings momentum expected to deliver YoY growth from 2Q through 4Q26: BEM, CPALL, HMPRO, MTC, OR, TRUE, TU. 3) Anti-oil plays — Stocks that stand to benefit directly from a decline in oil prices should Middle East tensions ease: airlines (AAV, BA), power producers (GPSC, BGRIM), and construction materials (SCC, SCCC). 4) Declining bond yield plays — Stocks set to benefit if US inflation comes in soft or below market expectations: MTC, SAWAD, TIDLOR.
Daily Top Picks
BCP: Supported by persistent tightness in the supply chain, particularly for middle distillates (diesel and jet fuel) due to limited new refining capacity. 3Q26 performance is expected to maintain its growth momentum, with upside potential from the OKEA gas business and the first full-quarter revenue recognition from its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) operations. Short-term TP is Bt48.50.
CENTEL: Short-term catalyst from 2Q26 net profit of Bt166mn (+51% YoY), significantly beating market expectations thanks to strong food operations and lower interest expenses. The 2H26 outlook remains positive, driven by seasonal tourism recovery and upside from the tourism stimulus scheme. Short-term TP is Bt40.00.
