IAA|27 Aug 26 7:31 AM

2Q26: Earnings inline; watch out for El Niño

2Q26 net profit was inline with our and consensus. Core profit fell 41% YoY (inline with our estimate), driven by weaker sales at the NN2 plant and elevated fuel costs at the BIC facility, despite being partially cushioned by stronger water flows at Xayaburi. We anticipate further YoY earnings compression in 3Q26 as rising gas costs and a projected 52% YoY drop in NN2 electricity production. Maintain a NEUTRAL rating with a mid-2027 target price of Bt2.8 (from Bt2.5) based on DCF valuation, as the firm navigates impending El Niño headwinds.

Recap 2Q26 results in line with estimates. CKP announced a net profit of Bt99mn in 2Q26, in line our and market expectations, declining 84% YoY and 45% QoQ. Excluding special items, core profit stood at Bt210mn in 2Q26, down 41% YoY. This was primarily due to a 25% YoY decrease in electricity sales revenue from NN2, aligning with a 25% YoY drop in sales volume, alongside higher fuel costs at BIC. However, the share of core profit from Xayaburi Power increased 49% YoY due to higher water flow.

Takeaway from analyst meeting. CKP stated that the Super El Niño has not yet impacted the run-of-river Xayaburi power plant, as water flow remains normal (slightly higher YoY). However, for the NN2 power plant, the company expects electricity production to drop by a material 52% YoY to 161GWh in 3Q26F. Despite below-average recent inflows at the NN2 facility, which were largely driven by the NN3 project impounding water ahead of its commercial operation date (COD) later this year, CKP has successfully sustained high reservoir levels to secure adequate electricity generation capacity for both this year and next year. The company continues to monitor the Super El Niño (drought) situation. Additionally, the Bangpa-in Cogeneration (BIC) plant is expected to be impacted by rising gas costs, though this will be partially offset by an increase in the Ft rate. Regarding the upcoming PDP2026, CKP sees low potential for new large hydropower plants in Thailand. As a result, the company is prioritizing large-scale greenfield hydropower and pumped storage developments in Laos.

3026 to be fall YoY. The 3Q26 outlook points to a continued YoY decline due to an anticipated drop in water volume YoY from a high base in 2025 especially for NN2 power plan. Additionally, we expect the impact from higher gas costs are expected to rise to US$380-390/mmbtu in 3Q26 (+23% YoY and +6% QoQ). However, there should be partially offset by the better performance for Xayaburi hydropower plant to potentially higher water flow YoY but should be limited upside on the limited of maximum capabilities for the plant.

Action & recommendation. We maintain our recommendation of NEUTRAL, as we expect impact from the El Niño effect in late-2026 to 2027, with a mid-2027 DCF-based TP of Bt2.8 (from Bt2.5), WACC 6.5% and terminal growth of 1.5%.

ESG key risks. Lower return on new investments and regulatory changes. Key ESG risk is the environmental impact, particularly of its dam hydropower plants that may alter river ecosystems and impact aquatic biodiversity.
