2Q26F: Profit to fall QoQ on stock loss
TOP’s share price has risen 43.8% over the past month, outperforming the SET (+6.5%) and local peers (+38%), and now trades at 0.7x PBV, near levels seen during the Russia-Ukraine war peak. We expect 2Q26F net profit of Bt8.4bn, down 58% QoQ on inventory losses, although underlying operations remain supported by healthy GIM and strong middle-distillate crack spreads. With limited upside from possible earnings revisions, few near-term catalysts, and the diesel price cap still an overhang, we downgrade TOP from OUTPERFORM to NEUTRAL and maintain TP at Bt60, based on 0.7x PBV.
2Q26F earnings to decline QoQ despite stronger market GIM. We expect TOP to report 2Q26F net profit of Bt8.4bn (due August 13), down 56.7% QoQ but up 30.2% YoY. The QoQ decline is primarily driven by an expected stock loss of US$12/bbl (Bt10.6bn), which offsets a stronger market GIM of US$22.8/bbl versus US$14.8/bbl in 1Q26. Middle distillate crack spreads remained exceptionally strong at above US$60/bbl, well above the five-year average of US$18-19/bbl. However, higher crude premiums, logistics expenses and utility costs are likely to limit margin expansion, leaving refinery broadly in line with Singapore GRM of US$20-21/bbl.
Lower refinery utilization to weigh on earnings. We expect 2Q26F refinery throughput to decline, with crude run rates easing to 107% from 113% in 1Q26 due to a one-month maintenance shutdown of CDU-1 (50kbd, 18% of capacity). Despite government restrictions on refined product exports, TOP appears able to optimize refinery operations through utilization of storage facilities from the Clean Fuel Project (CFP). Operating cost is expected to remain competitive at US$2.2/bbl, compared with US$1.9/bbl in 1Q26 and US$2.1/bbl in 2Q25, mitigating part of the impact from lower utilization.
Lube base strength offsets weak aromatics contribution. We expect stronger profitability from the lube base business to support 2Q26F results. Tight supply from the Middle East has lifted product spreads, driving GIM contribution from the segment to a record high of around US$2/bbl versus the typical US$1-1.5/bbl range. In contrast, the aromatics business is likely to remain a drag on earnings as PX and benzene spreads over ULG95 stay weak.
More earnings pressure to emerge in 3Q26. We expect the diesel ex-refinery price cap, extended to August 15, to reduce profit by ~Bt1.4bn pre-tax (US$1.5/bbl), a smaller impact than in 2Q26. Strong diesel and jet fuel crack spreads near US$60/bbl should partly offset the hit, but elevated crude premiums amid renewed Middle East tensions may continue to pressure margins. We therefore expect 3Q26 earnings to remain vulnerable, as softer refining margins and potential inventory losses from weaker oil prices could outweigh operational improvements.
Valuation and earnings outlook. TOP’s earnings remain highly sensitive to oil prices and inventory movements, though strong middle-distillate cracks and lube base margins should continue to support operations. We maintain our end-2026 TP of Bt60, based on 0.7x PBV (5.4x EV/EBITDA). Valuation upside will depend on the sustainability of refining margins, utilization, and supply-demand fundamentals. Nonetheless, we downgrade from OUTPERFORM to NEUTRAL after the recent rally.
Key risks: Volatile oil prices and GRM, inventory losses, weak aromatics demand, and CFP delays or cost overruns. Key ESG risks include environmental impacts and tighter GHG emissions regulations.
