To move between 1380-1400

The SET is expected to move between 1380-1400. The Fed December minutes signaled a slowing in interest rate cuts; however, this is already in the market to some extent, with US bond yield falling. The index has a lower bound between 1375-1380, with the upper bound between 1395-1400. A break up would be a good sign.

Today’s highlights

  • Amazon is moving on its Bt190bn investment in Thailand, launching cloud infrastructure service "AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region", expected to add over US$10bn to GDP annually and create 11,000 jobs.
  • The SET plans to disclose pledged share information in the TSD system to help investors make better-informed decisions and build confidence in the Thai stock market. Trading regulation measures will be reviewed before being sent to the board in late January, with rules to be announced in February.
  • FETCO is preparing to discuss SSF extension with the Ministry of Finance to attract foreign investment to Thailand. It says the EEC is fosters hope for Thai economic growth, with 12 investment projects worth over Bt150bn awaiting contract signing.
  • The JSCCIB forecasts Thailand's 2025 GDP growth at 2.4-2.9%, with exports growing 1.5-2.5%, lower than 2024's 4% growth, amid US trade policy uncertainties. Inflation expected to remain low at 0.8-1.2%, with tourism remaining the main economic driver.
  • US private sector employment by ADP in December increased by 122,000 positions, the lowest since August 2024, indicating a slowdown in the labor market.
  • China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Ministry of Finance announced a 15% subsidy for purchases of mobile phones, tablets and smart watches priced under 6,000 yuan, with a maximum subsidy of 1,500 yuan per person, designed to stimulate the economy.
  • The Cabinet approved the Dark Red Line suburban railway extension from Rangsit to Thammasat University, spanning 8.84 km and a cost of Bt6.47bn. The SRT is preparing for bidding this year, targeting contractor signing in October 2025.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways between 1370-1410. Although Chinese economic figures are expected to recover, and the US economy is still strong, investors are waiting for Trump’s trade policies after he is inaugurated on Jan 20. Domestic factors are mixed on expectation of stimulus, which will be gradually released and start to show some results from the beginning of the year. However, the market may be pressured by the lack of any new catalyst and concerns over political stability, which may impact the direction of fund flows, while there is also selling of matured LTFs. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways with no new catalyst, watching for political stability and Trump’s trade policies, while selling of matured LTFs will pressure fund flow. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:

  • Stocks benefiting from government consumption stimulus, Easy e-Receipt, running from Jan 16 to Feb 28, and a Bt10,000 handout around Chinese New Year: Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, CPALL and TNP), Consumption (CBG and OSP) and Tourism (MINT).
  • As an attraction to investors wishing to generate cash flow for their portfolios: stocks offering high dividend yield of over 3% on 2024 earnings, with strong balance sheets and continued growth in 2025 – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
  • Earnings plays: Stocks where 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ and who regularly pay dividends – OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Trading idea for high-risk investors: stocks expected to benefit from China’s government stimulus – IVL and PTTGC.

Daily top picks

KTB: High dividend stock able to generate cash for portfolios while the stock market waits for a new catalyst. Dividend in 2024 is expected to be Bt1.06/share (paid once per year), giving yield of 4.9%. 4Q24 profit is expected to grow 50%YoY, the highest in the banking sector.

BTG: Our top pick in the Food sector. 4Q24 core profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, supported by higher margin, outperforming peers. 2025 core profit is also expected to grow 38% and lead the sector, driven by recovering domestic swine business (off a low base in 1H24) and the finalization of the acquisition of an egg business in Singapore, expected in 1Q25.
