MSCI Global Standard

Daily top picks

Expect a technical rebound

The SET fell close to supports of 1230 and 1220, which are following points in case of a technical rebound. Upper bound is at resistance of 1247. A break above this would be a good sign of recovery with next resistance at 1260. Key item influencing the SET is the MPC meeting tomorrow.

Today’s highlights

• The Minister of Finance says there has been progress on capital market support measures, stating that a fund will be launched in March to accommodate a shift of funds from LTF to ThaiESG, with ongoing consultations with FETCO throughout the process.
• The Minister of Finance hopes the MPC will cut interest rates to stimulate the economy, saying the weaker baht boosts exports. He is also requesting relaxation of LTV criteria for more flexible lending, while planning to increase debt resolution measures to improve debt restructuring.
• FTI reported January vehicle production at 107,103 units, down 24.63% YoY. Domestic sales decreased 12.26% due to strict lending criteria, while exports fell to 62,000 units, the lowest in 33 months, amid concerns over US import tariffs and increased competition from Chinese electric vehicles.
• The FTI is concerned for the automotive industry in 2025, particularly strict lending policies at financial institutions. It has asked the government to expedite loan guarantee measures for pickup trucks, reducing the timeline from 4 to 2 months.
• The Government Pension Fund (GPF) announced a 2025 target return of 6%, higher than last year's 4.12%, aiming to push assets under management to Bt1.6tn by end-2026. Strategy includes reducing bond weighting while increasing allocation to global and emerging market equities, Thai stocks, and alternative assets.
• The US Treasury Department has issued new sanctions against Iran targeting its oil industry, affecting oil brokers, tankers and transporters that sell and ship Iranian petroleum.
• Microsoft has canceled the lease for a large data center in the US, potentially indicating excessive AI infrastructure capacity relative to demand. The company's US$80bn investment plan remains in place, though some adjustments may be made.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside; key resistance is at 1300. Macro factors are expected to be the main factors pushing the index: the US PCE index, which is likely to slow to 2.5% and keep the Fed from changing its stance, and China manufacturing and services PMIs, which are gradually improving. The BoT’s stance is to keep interest rate unchanged at 2.5%, which the market has already largely incorporated. 1Q25 profit is expected to show that the Thai stock market passed bottom in 2H24. We expect foreign money flow to improve, while the SET’s revision trading measure is expected to improve confidentiality and ease some concerns. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited, with key resistance at 1300. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Dividend plays that are expected have high dividend yield of above 3% for investors who want to generate cash flow on their portfolios – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPALL, HMPRO, BTG, ERW, AU and KLINIQ, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.

Daily top picks

CPALL: Seen as a defensive stock whose profit is expected to continue to grow. 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ due to high season, strong SSSG and higher margin due to higher sales of high-margin products. Additional economic stimulus and interest rate cut would bring upside to forecast.

BDMS: Seen as a defensive stock during high market volatility, with profit expected to continue to grow. 4Q24 core profit is expected to grow YoY from higher demand for medical services, to bring 2024 core profit to Bt16.2bn, growth of 12.6%. Valuation is attractive, trading at 2024F PER of 23.6x and 2025F PER of 21.0x, lower than -2SD.
