Global Small Cap

Daily top picks

Weak signals

The market lacks a new catalyst, externals do not support; the Fed is not in a hurry to cut interest rate and the trade war overhangs. Together these factors are urging investors to sell to avert risk and have generated a negative technical signal, with no turning sign. Support is at 1237; a fall below this would be negative, with next support at 1230. Resistances are between 1255-1265.

Today’s highlights

• A fund manager survey by the BofA shows highest interest in the Japanese stock market in Asia, overweighting 54%, followed by Taiwan, China, and Singapore, while the Thai stock market is of less interest, underweighted 22%.
• FETCO expects to talk with the Ministry of Finance in early March after proposing to shift LTF funds to a new Thai ESG 2 fund, emphasizing need for attractive tax benefits and portfolio adjustment to over 50% stocks to help limit selling pressure to Bt5-6bn, along with proposing medium and long-term measures for Thai stock market sustainability.
• The PM will chair a stimulus board meeting in late Feb, proposing phase 3 of the digital wallet. The NESDC has proposed a Bt260bn-plus economic stimulus package for 1H25. The FTI suggests prioritizing economic stimulus projects, including a Bt10,000 domestic spending scheme.
• The Pink Line extension from Srirat to Muang Thong Thani has reached 86% construction, with test runs expected in late May, free service in June, and then joining the Bt20 flat fare in Sep 2025.
• US crude oil inventories increased by 4.6mn bbl last week, higher than expected. Gasoline and diesel stocks decreased by 0.15mn bbl and 2.1mn bbl respectively. Initial jobless claims rose to 219,000, higher than market expectations
• The Japanese government is preparing a US visit to negotiate import tax exemptions following Trump's announcement of tariffs on Japanese high-quality steel and aluminum exports to the US.
• China is pushing for negotiations with the EU, particularly regarding progress on EV import tariffs and China-Europe trade discussions.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited around main resistance at 1320. There are issues to follow, including the FOMC minutes, expected to pressure the market as the Fed chair has signalled a gradual cut in interest rate, and US manufacturing and services PMIs which are not expected to be good as the US president’s actions are causing trade uncertainty. Domestically, the next two weeks will see the release of 4Q24 earnings. 4Q24 GDP grew 3.2% (with 2024 GDP growing 2.5%), showing continued recovery. GDP is expected to grow in 1Q25, spurred by stimulus, but it is too soon to adjust forecasts. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Plays on stimulus benefits (Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two) – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW).
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
4) Trading idea: for risk-takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPAXT, MTC, TRUE and CBG, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
