Global Small Cap
Daily top picks
Range-bound;
Follow Fed minutes
The SET is expected to be range-bound between 1250-1272. The market still has no new catalyst, continuing to be dogged by worries over the trade war, limiting the upper bound, while downside risk remains. Support is between 1245-1250; a fall below would be a negative signal. Follow the Fed minutes.
Today’s highlights
• Reuters reported that Ukrainian drones have been targeting Russian energy infrastructure, and yesterday attacked a CPC oil pumping station, affecting oil transportation from Kazakhstan to global companies like Chevron and Exxon Mobil for the first time.
• China's Foreign Ministry welcomed peace-building efforts in Ukraine, including US-Russia negotiations, and hopes all parties will participate in the peace negotiation process.
• The BoT reports a contraction in commercial bank lending in 2024 of 0.4%, the highest contraction in 15 years, pressured by shrinking retail loans across all categories, especially hire-purchase loans, while large corporate and government loans continued to expand.
• The BoT is considering whether relaxing the LTV (loan-to-value) requirement would stimulate the real estate sector, particularly for vulnerable groups, while also looking at signals of speculation in the real estate sector along with remaining supply and demand.
• The Deputy Minister of Finance expressed confidence that Thailand's GDP in 2025 will grow no less than 3%, despite the NESDC's projection of only 2.8% growth. Apart from the Phase 3 digital wallet scheme entering the economy in 2Q25, the Ministry is preparing additional economic stimulus measures.
• The FTI expects the beverage market to recover in line with the economy, especially in the service sector. In the next 5 years (2025-2030), average annual growth is expected at 3.5-4.5%, led by non-alcoholic beverages, while alcoholic beverages are expected to grow at a lower rate of only 1-2% per year.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited around main resistance at 1320. There are issues to follow, including the FOMC minutes, expected to pressure the market as the Fed chair has signalled a gradual cut in interest rate, and US manufacturing and services PMIs which are not expected to be good as the president’s actions are causing trade uncertainty. Domestically, the next two weeks will see the release of 4Q24 earnings. 4Q24 GDP grew 3.2% (with 2024 GDP growing 2.5%), showing continued recovery. GDP is expected to grow in 1Q25, spurred by stimulus, but it is too soon to adjust forecasts. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Plays on stimulus benefits (Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two) – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW).
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
4) Trading idea: for risk-takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPAXT, MTC, TRUE and CBG, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
BBL: This is our top pick in the bank sector, in recognition of its strong balance sheet, strongest loan growth and lowest quality asset risk. Valuation is attractive compared to peers. The bank’s consideration of capital management via either raising dividend payout or a share buyback is a short-term catalyst.
CPAXT: 4Q24 net profit was Bt4bn (+21%YoY and +103%QoQ), higher than all estimates, bringing 2024 net profit growth to 22.3%. It is paying a DPS on 2H24 profit of Bt0.53, XD Apr 8. 2025 profit is expected to grow and outperform peers by at least 19% (peers are expected to grow 15%) after synergy becomes clear over 2025-2027.
