Global Small Cap

Daily top picks

Div. Yield 2%

Continues to face negatives

Signals are still negative and there is no new catalyst, while negatives continue to pile on. The most recent are concerns over AOT as King Power faces liquidity problems and DELTA’s large miss to 4Q24 earnings forecasts. The SET has supports at 1260 and 1250; the upper bound is limited at 1280-1290.

Today’s highlights

• The SET plans to propose tax exemption for profit at companies listed on the bourse; it will launch the Jump+ project, expected to begin in May 2024. The initiative aims to create added value and attract investors. Initially it expects at least 50 listed companies to participate. It is also reviewing measures and adjusting share buyback criteria to support company liquidity.
• World Bank forecasts Thailand's economy growth at 2.9% in 2025, accelerating from 2.6% in 2024, supported by domestic demand and economic stimulus. Tourism and consumption remain key driving factors.
• The Minister of Energy sats that cutting electricity cost by Bt0.17/unit as proposed by ERC would require cancellation of adder contracts with SPP and VSPP power producers. This is currently not feasible as the contracts are perpetual and renewed every 5 years. It is now studying methods to modify contracts and manage fuel resources.
• TAT expects 3.5mn foreign tourist arrivals in February 2025, up 5% YoY and recovering to 97% of 2019 levels. This brings cumulative tourist arrivals for 2M25 to 6.99mn.
• Today, watch for Thailand's 4Q24 GDP growth report by NESDC. Market expects 3.9% YoY growth and 0.7% QoQ.
• Last Friday, Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported vehicles starting April 2, potentially affecting Japanese, German, and South Korean automakers.
• Bloomberg reports TSMC is considering taking controlling stakes in various Intel Corp facilities at the request of US government officials to promote chip production and maintain technological leadership.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited around main resistance at 1320. There are issues to follow, including the FOMC minutes, expected to pressure the market as the Fed chair has signalled a gradual cut in interest rate, and US manufacturing and services PMIs which are not expected to be good as the president’s actions are causing trade uncertainty. Domestically, the next two weeks will see the release of 4Q24 earnings and 4Q24 GDP, which is expected to show continued recovery and grow off last year’s low base. GDP is expected to grow in 1Q25, spurred by stimulus, but it is too soon to adjust forecasts. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to recover with limited upside. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are highly likely to pay regular dividends – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Plays on stimulus benefits (Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two) – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW).
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
4) Trading idea: for risk-takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPAXT, MTC, TRUE and CBG, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.

Daily top picks

ADVANC: A defensive stock with steady profit growth. 1Q25 profit is expected to be strong, and 2025 profit is expected at Bt38.5bn, growing 10.5%. There is upside to profit from the upcoming license auction. It is paying a dividend on 2H24 profit of Bt5.74/share (XD on Feb 20), dividend yield of 2%.

CPAXT: 4Q24 profit is expected to be the year’s peak, growing YoY from higher sales and margin and QoQ due to seasonal factors. 2024 profit is expected to grow 24.6%, followed by 19% growth in 2025, outperforming peers (avg. growth of 15%). After acquisition, synergy is expected to take place and be clearer from 2025-2027.
