ZEN reported a net profit of Bt11mn in 2Q25, growth off a low base of only Bt1mn in 2Q24 but down 16% QoQ, meeting market estimates. The YoY growth was due to a higher EBIT margin while the QoQ drop was due to rising SG&A expense. We are cautious in view of the hurdles caused by weak consumer spending and competition in the restaurant industry. With a limited upside gain, we maintain our Neutral rating on ZEN with an end-2025 DCF TP of Bt6.5.
2Q25: Earnings meet estimates. ZEN reported a net profit of Bt11mn in 2Q25, up off a low base of only Bt1mn in 2Q24 but down 16% QoQ, aligning with market estimates. The YoY improvement was due to higher EBIT margin while the QoQ drop reflected rising SG&A expense.
2Q25 highlights:
- (+) Restaurants (accounting for 73% of revenue): SSS was -3.4% in 2Q25, improving from -14.8% in 2Q24 and -9.8% in 1Q25. We believe the improvement is driven by AKA Yakiniku, which accounts for 30% of restaurant revenue, where SSS improved after ZEN implemented initiatives to boost sales, including store revamping and the introduction of a lower price tier in 3Q24 to broaden its customer base. ZEN did not open any new owned outlets and closed some loss-making ones, resulting in a net decrease in the number of owned outlets to 169 in 2Q25 from 184 in 2Q24 and 177 in 1Q25.
- (=) Franchised business (5% of revenue): Sale of raw materials to franchisees and franchise fees were flat YoY but up 6% QoQ. In 2Q25, five new franchise outlets were added to bring total franchise outlets to 145.
- (+) Merchandising and trading business (22% of revenue): Revenue grew 24% YoY and was flat QoQ.
- (+) EBIT margin was 3.3% in 2Q25, up from 1.6% in 2Q24, driven by lower cost of goods sold and SG&A expenses. We believe the improvement was due to lower raw material costs and the closure of loss-making outlets. The narrowing in margin from 4.3% in 1Q25 we attribute to higher SG&A expenses related to capacity expansion in the merchandising and trading business.
Earnings forecast maintained. 1H25 core earnings account for 36% of our full-year forecast and we leave our projection unchanged. While we expect better earnings in 2H25, we are cautious in view of the handicaps posed by weak consumer spending and competition in the restaurant industry. We stay Neutral on ZEN with an end-2025 DCF TP of Bt6.5, based on WACC at 7.1% and long-term growth of 2%.
Risks. 1) Economic slowdown impacting consumer spending, 2) intense competition, 3) rising costs and 4) change in consumer preferences. We see ESG risk as consumer safety and food quality (S).
