Assessing the impact of China-Japan tension

The recent surge in China-Japan tensions which has led to travel warnings and significant flight reductions through March 2026, is expected to limit Chinese tourism to Japan. Historically, such conflicts have led to a diversion of travel to other destinations, including Thailand, and our assessment suggests a potential 12–24% increase in Chinese tourist arrivals. While we are monitoring the risks posed by the floods in the south and their impact on tourist confidence, the distribution of tourism revenue across all major hubs - Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket - supports our expected QoQ growth in 4Q25 and 1Q26. Our top picks are CENTEL and ERW.

Event: Recent tensions between China and Japan have escalated due to a dispute over Japan's stance on the Taiwan issue. Reportedly, China has warned its citizens against traveling to Japan and instructed its national airlines to cut flights between the two countries through March 2026.

Reflecting on past events. We studied two international incidents in the past to assess the potential impact on China outbound tourism:

  • 2012-2013 Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dispute (China-Japan): The Chinese government restricted group tour package sales to Japan, resulting in a 28% YoY drop in Chinese tourist arrivals to Japan over an 11-month period.
  • 2017 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) dispute (China-South Korea): Chinese tourism to South Korea plunged 55% YoY over a 12-month period.

During both periods, we observed that tourism demand was not significantly reduced, but diverted to other major outbound destinations (excluding Hong Kong and Macau): Thailand, Japan or South Korea (depending on the incident), Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.

Assessment: opportunity for tourist inflow. We look at the past to evaluate the opportunity for increased Chinese tourist arrivals. We assume that Chinese tourist arrivals in Japan would fall 28-55%, in the range of the past two incidents (then first involving Japan and then South Korea). We also assume the five main alternative destinations will maintain their current market share of Chinese tourists. Under these assumptions, we estimate that these countries, including Thailand, have the potential to see an increase in Chinese tourist arrivals of 12–24%. Operators such as AAV and ERW are observing improving demand from Chinese tourists in 4Q25 and are monitoring the potential upside that may arise from this ongoing travel diversion.

Two-sided situation: risks and potential. We are currently monitoring the impact of the major floods in the south on the operations of tourism stocks, noting that the key factors are the duration of the flooding and how long it takes to regain tourist confidence. As tourism company revenues are diversified across multiple destinations—primarily Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket—we continue to expect their operations to grow QoQ in 4Q25 and 1Q26. Supporting this expectation is upcoming government tourism stimulus measures, such as free domestic flight tickets for foreign tourists (expected to start Jan-Apr 2026), and the potential increase in Chinese tourists as they shift their travel destinations. Our top picks are CENTEL (TP of Bt39) and ERW (TP of Bt3.3).

Risks. Key risks are a global economic slowdown that would hurt consumer spending and willingness to travel, workforce shortage and cost inflation that would damage profitability. We see ESG risk as effective environmental management of greenhouse gases, energy, wastewater, and waste (E).
