Election day announced; watch MPC

The market is expected to move sideways. The ECT announced Feb 8, 2026 for the general election, driving speculation as the country enters the election period. The MPC is expected to cut interest rate on Wednesday. However, Thai-Cambodian border tension may cause the US to bring back higher tariffs to pressure Thailand. Resistances are at 1280/1285, supports at 1270/1265.

Today’s highlights
• The ECT approved the draft nationwide election plan for MPs, setting the date at Feb 8, 2026. Registration for MP and PM candidates is scheduled for Dec 27-31, 2025.
• The Minister of Finance said the foundation has been laid to support the dissolution of Parliament and though new policy launches will be paused, the economy is projected to grow over 2% in 2025. Keep an eye on the ECT's approval of the "Half-Half Plus" phase two program and legal amendments. Phase two of the double-track railway will have to wait for a new government.
• The BoT has ordered financial institutions to increase scrutiny of forward foreign exchange sales transactions by gold traders, and require verification of gold sales for every transaction to ensure they are genuine.
• China's economy in Nov remained weak after retail sales and industrial production grew less than expected, fixed asset investment contracted more than forecast and new and existing home prices continued declining, indicating the property sector is still in crisis, now for over four years.
• The SET announced 265 listed companies passed SET ESG Ratings 2025, up from 219 last year. 57 companies passed for the first time and 89 companies improved their rankings, while 6 companies saw rankings decline and 11 previously qualified companies failed to meet criteria this year. In 2026, the SET will adopt FTSE Russell ESG Scores for assessment instead.
• Markets are watching key US economic data releases, with Non-Farm Payrolls reporting for two months: Nov and Oct. Markets expect Nov to add only 40,000 positions while unemployment is expected to hold at 4.4%; Oct retail sales are expected to grow 0.2%.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways with a downward bias due to concerns over Thailand's political vacuum, with a potential test of the previous support level around 1230 and an upside cap at 1285. Key factors to monitor include: central bank policy meetings - BoJ (market expects a 25bps rate hike to 0.75%), ECB and BoE (market expects rates to remain unchanged), and BoT (market expects a 25bps rate cut to 1.25%), as well as key US economic data including November inflation, October PCE, and November employment figures. Domestically, now that the general election has been set for February 8 next year, watch the election and the formation of a new government. Our investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

In the short term the SET is expected to move down on concerns of a political vacuum and no new catalyst, while waiting for the MPC meeting. Our investment strategy is "selective buy" in three main and three trading themes:

  1. Defensive stocks whose profit can withstand uncertainties, with 4Q25 earnings expected to grow YoY and on which we recommend Outperform – ADVANC, BDMS, BEM, BGRIM, GULF and PTT.
  2. High quality dividend stocks which are categorized into: 1) long-term dividend stocks with stable profit, low volatility, strong balance sheets, high dividend yield of above 5% - AP, DIF, KTB, PTT and TISCO; and 2) short-term (6 months) dividend stocks with dividend yield after interim dividend still above 5% - BAM, KBANK, SAT, THANI and TLI.
  3. Stocks that benefit from the interest rate downcycle, as we expect the MPC to make one more cut this year and twice next year: companies that benefit from lower financial cost as they carry a high proportion of floating-rate debt (CENTEL, GPSC, TRUE) and those whose operating costs are reduced and/or that benefit from higher purchasing power (AP and MTC), and REITs (DIF, FTREIT and LHHOTEL).
  4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers who want to speculate: 1) stocks which benefit from positive sentiment if the MPC cuts interest rate this week – AP, GULF, GPSC, MTC and SAWAD; 2) stocks which benefit from fund inflow head of an election – Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT and BJC), Food (GFPT) and Leasing (MTC and SAWAD); we recommend avoiding short-term investment in Construction Services and Construction Materials as these are connected to government projects; and 3) SET50 stocks expected to benefit from window dressing – BDMS, BH, MINT, CPF and LH – as stock prices declined YTD and data from the last five years shows prices rise 2.2% on average if buying in the five final trading days of the year.

Special Report: Yearbook 2026 “Riding the Wild Horse”, our Thai year-end report, reflects our view that investors can still get returns amid volatility. Check out our eight top-picks.

Daily Top Picks

TRUE: A catalyst from expectations of good profit. Revenue from the mobile phone business bottomed in 3Q25, with net gains in new subscribers in 4Q25. There is also support from lower expenses after the spectrum auction. Short-term TP is Bt11.50.
