Daily top picks
Testing previous low
The SET is expected to move sideways down and may test the previous low of 1056, with supports at 1056-1050 and 1030, while resistances are at 1080 and 1085. The US joined Israel in bombing Iran and attacked three locations where Iran is suspected of building nuclear weapons, raising risk of an extended war. Keep an eye on Iran’s decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, while domestic political uncertainty continues to rattle the market.
Today’s highlights
• Trump said the US bombed three targets where Iran is working on nuclear weapons, and threatened to launch more severe attacks if Iran does not accept peace and halt nuclear research. This escalates tensions in the Middle East and is expected to pressure risky assets, while oil and gold prices will tend to rise.
• The SET issued temporary measures to handle volatility: SET and mai adjusted the ceiling/floor to -15% and +15%, and TFEX was adjusted accordingly. The Dynamic Price Band was cut to -5% and +5% (from 10%) from the latest trading price. This is effective from June 23 and expected to last no more than June 27.
• The OFFO reduced the Oil Fund contribution rate for the 4th time this month, reducing diesel contribution by another Bt0.65/liter. This caused the Oil Fund to flip to subsidizing diesel by Bt0.35/liter to handle volatile global oil price. This is seen as a pressure on retail oil plays.
• The FPO said the Ministry of Finance is closely monitoring the Israel-Iran situation and is considering additional economic stimulus measures to prepare for potential risk spillover. Last week, the Economic Stimulus Board approved stimulus projects worth Bt115bn out of a total Bt157bn, expected to boost GDP by 0.4-0.5%. The plan is awaiting Cabinet approval on Tuesday.
• The BoT Governor Selection Board revealed that 6 out of 7 candidates have passed qualifications and are preparing for interviews and vision presentations on June 24. The board will select 2-3 suitable candidates before July 2 and submit their names to the Minister of Finance for consideration before presenting to the Cabinet.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to continue to fluctuate in response to external and domestic pressures. For external factors, there is tension in the Middle East and additional trade negotiations and unilateral tariffs by the US on trading partners, while for domestic factors, there is political uncertainty and progress of stimulus packages - tourism stimulus and Bt157bn economic stimulus. However, we believe the SET at below 1100 or PER 2025F of below 12x is still an attractive point for medium- to long-term investors to accumulate-buy. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to continue to fluctuate as it faces external and domestic pressure: the Middle East, Trump’s trade war, local politics and the stimulus package. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in three main themes and one trading theme with specific positives:
1. Defensive stocks that fluctuate little and whose profit is expected to be able to withstand external pressure – DIF, BDMS and BCH.
2. High-quality dividend stocks (SET50 with SETESG Rating A or higher) for generating cash flow for the portfolio in the short term, expected to pay an interim dividend off 1H25 profit with dividend yield higher than 2% - ADVANC, BBL and PTT.
3. Earnings plays whose profit is growing, with 2Q25 core profit expected to grow YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, CPALL and BTG.
4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers who want to speculate on the Middle East tension, choose stocks that benefit from higher oil price – PTT and PTTEP.
Daily Top picks
PTT: Price has a catalyst from higher oil price, while the stock is trading at an attractive valuation. 2025F PBV is at 0.7x (-1.5 SD) and PER is at 7.5x against the 10-year average of 1.3x for PBV and 14.6x for PER. 2025 profit is expected to surge 44%, and dividend yield is expected to be a high 6-7%. Recommend to buy for trading at not higher than Bt31/share.
DIF: The fund is seen to have limited impact from market fluctuation. 2Q25 core profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ from lower interest expense. Dividend yield is expected to be a high 11% in 2025. A further cut in interest in 2H25 is expected to be a catalyst.
