MSCI Global Standard

Daily top picks

Mixed, recovery may continue

The MPC surprised the market by cutting the interest rate yesterday, causing the index to rocket, while technical view is beginning to be positive, with recovery poised to continue. Next resistances are 1240 and 1255, while short-term supports are at 1220 and 1210, which are expected to stand.

Today’s highlights
• Reuters reports that Itochu has decided not to participate in the acquisition of Seven & i Holdings, and after market close, CPALL also announced it would not be joining the bid.
• The MPC voted 6-1 to cut the policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.00%, contrary to market expectations of no change. This follows a worse performance in Thailand's economy than anticipated. GDP forecasts will be revised in April to 2.5% from the previous 2.9% target, indicating this cut does not signal the beginning of a downward interest rate cycle.
• The Minister of Tourism and Sports is preparing to propose a Bt3.5bn low-season tourism stimulus package for 1mn takers from May to Sep 2025. The program will be similar to the "We Travel Together" campaign, subsidizing 50% of travel expenses.
• The president of the Thai Hotels Association has proposed to reduce the visa-free duration covering 93 countries from 60 days to no more than 30 days. This comes after observation of increased business activities by foreigners in Thailand through nominees, affecting national security and country confidence.
• The NESDC reports the household debt to GDP ratio has decreased to 89.0% (Bt16.34tn) from 89.8%. However, NPLs to credit ratio has increased by 14.1% QoQ across all categories, especially credit card debt, with the exception of agricultural loans.
• The EIA reports US crude oil inventories fell by 2.3mn bbl last week, contrary to market expectations. Finished petroleum product inventories increased, with gasoline and diesel stocks rising 0.37mn and 3.9mn bbl respectively.
• China's president has told government officials not to panic under pressure from the US, saying that the Chinese government has measures prepared to counter Trump's trade policies.

Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside; key resistance is at 1300. Macro factors are expected to be the main factors pushing the index: the US PCE index, which is likely to slow to 2.5% and keep the Fed from changing its stance, and China manufacturing and services PMIs, which are gradually improving, while the BoT surprised the market by cutting interest rate to 2.00%, bringing money flowing back into the market. 1Q25 profit is expected to show that the Thai stock market passed bottom in 2H24. We expect foreign money flow to improve, while the SET’s revision trading measure is expected to improve confidentiality and ease some concerns. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited, with key resistance at 1300. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Dividend plays that are expected have high dividend yield of above 3% for investors who want to generate cash flow on their portfolios – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPALL, HMPRO, BTG, ERW, AU and KLINIQ, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.

Daily top picks

CPALL: The stock has a short-term catalyst after the company said it was not interested in joining the Seven & i Holdings deal, which is expected to send the stock price back to where it was before the news hit (+4% from last close). 4Q24 profit was Bt6.9bn (+23%YoY and +12%QoQ), 5% above our estimates and 1Q25 is expected to continue strong. Recommend to buy for trading at no higher than Bt55.

GPSC: It has short-term catalysts from a decline in natural gas price and bond yield and inclusion in the MSCI Global Small Cap Index (effective at market close on Feb 28). There are also catalysts from higher capacity, winning a bid in phase 2 of the green energy auction, and immunity to the global minimum tax.
