Fed’s slow rate cut pressures
The SET is expected to be pressured although the Fed cut interest rate 25bps as expected. However, it did signal a reduction in the number of rate cuts from four times to twice next year, resulting in appreciation of the US dollar, a rise in bond yield, all bad news for the SET. Supports are 1390 and 1377, with the upper bound limited at resistances of 1408 and 1420.
Today’s highlights
- The MPC unanimously decided to maintain the policy interest rate at 2.25%, as expected by the market, stating that the current rate aligns with economic conditions. Inflation is moving toward the target range, and Thailand's economy is projected to grow by 2.7% in 2024 and 2.9% in 2025.
- The Fed decided to cut interest rate by 25bps to 4.25-4.50%, as anticipated. However, the Dot Plot signals only two rate cuts of 25bps each in 2025 compared to September’s four cuts totaling 100bps.
- The FTI reported Industrial Confidence Index in November rose to 91.4, the highest in eight months, with accelerating orders, robust exports and a weaker baht enhancing competitiveness.
- The Minister of Commerce stated after a joint meeting with the JSCCIB that Thailand's 2025 exports are expected to grow 2-3% to Bt10.38-10.48tn, the highest level ever.
- Honda and Nissan have discussed a potential merger to become the world's third-largest automaker, competing in the EV era led by China and Tesla. Toyota confirmed an investment of Bt55bn in Thailand over the next five years.
- The EIA reported a decrease in crude oil stock of 934,000 bbl and a reduction in distillate stocks by 3.1mn bbl last week, while gasoline stocks increased by 2.3mn bbl.
- The SET announced the results of the securities selection for index calculation in 1H25. For the SET50, four stocks were added (BANPU, CCET, COM7, SAWAD) and four were removed (BCP, CENTEL, EA, TIDLOR). For the SET100, added were CCET, COCOCO, JTS, PR9 and removed were MBK, RBF, TIPH, TOA.
Strategy today
The short-term SET outlook is volatile and is waiting for a turning sign to stand above 1400. Market upside depends on China's economic data and buying in tax savings funds toward year’s end. Continued monitoring of US trade policies and the global economic slowdown is crucial. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy"
Trading today
In the short term, the SET is expected to be volatile, with upside hinging on China's economic data and purchase of tax savings funds at the end of the year. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:
- Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with these characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - ADVANC, AP, BBL, BDMS and HMPRO.
- Stocks benefiting from government consumption and tourism stimulus: Commerce (CPALL, CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
- Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
- Trading Idea for high-risk investors: Stocks that are recovering but prices lag - BEM, BDMS, MINT, AP.
