Daily top picks

Range-bound, recovering overall

The SET is beginning to form a base at support of 1422, which is used as a following point for recovery; the upper bound is at 1435. If the index can break above this, recovery will be clear, with next resistance at 1400. Overall, the index is expected to recover, pushed by the Vayupak and deductible tax funds toward the end of this year.

Today’s highlights

  • President-elect Trump has warned BRICS countries against creating a new currency to replace the US dollar, threatening levying potentially 100% import tariffs or preventing these countries from selling products in the US.
  • Russia has announced a temporary cancellation of its gasoline export ban, which was originally set to end at the end of this year, to support the domestic oil refining industry.
  • The Cabinet approved extending the Bt20 fare for the Purple and Red lines until Nov 30, 2025, and approved tax measures to help flood victims repair their homes and vehicles.
  • The BoT reports improvement in Thailand’s economy in October from the previous month, driven by exports, tourism and private consumption, which benefited from the Bt10,000 cash handout. However, some economic sectors remain slow due to structural problems and declining competitiveness.
  • The Ministry of Energy expects the 2024 National Energy Plan to be submitted to the Cabinet with implementation by the end of this year. In the draft, hydrogen will be used for electricity generation starting in 2030, potentially increasing the value of low-carbon hydrogen to ~Bt80bn by 2050.
  • SCB EIC predicts the overall retail business in 2025 will grow 5.1%YoY, up from the previous forecast of 4.8%YoY. Despite slowing private consumption, economic stimulus projects initiated in 2024 and continuing into 2025 (Phases 2 and 3) are expected to boost purchasing power.
  • The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that China will take severe countermeasures after the US approved a US$385mn arms sale to Taiwan, considering it a violation of the One-China principle and an infringement of China's sovereignty.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways with psychological support at 1400 and see some rebounds arising out of limited effects from external factors, stable US economic figures, with China’s trading expected to be pressured by concerns of tariffs and a slowdown in the global economy. Domestically, there is no new catalyst to stimulate investment, other than hopes for additional stimulus packages from the government. Our strategy is “selective buy”.

Trading today

In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as funds are likely to flow out from Ems on concerns over a possible trade war, while at home there is no new catalyst. We recommend “Selective Buy” with three main themes and one trading idea:

  • Stocks expected to benefit from consumption and tourism stimulus and household debt relief measures. Recommend Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT, CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
  • Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with following characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - BBL, ADVANC and HMPRO
  • Trading Idea: investors who can accept high risk may speculate on stocks likely to be included in SET50 in 1H25 – BANPU, CCET, COM7 and SAWAD, and stocks expected to benefit from the floods in the South – HMPRO, CPALL and TASCO. Be cautious in trading in Healthcare, Automotive and Construction Materials, where 4Q24 earnings are looking weaker.

Daily top picks

GULF: 4Q24 profit is expected to again be a new high on capacity expansion. Price is expected to be driven by benefit from the acquisition of INTUCH, which will improve the company’s balance sheet and support the upcoming auction for renewable energy plus the cyclic move down in the interest rate.

TASCO: Benefits from falling oil price and the floods. 4Q24 core profit is expected to grow YoY, supported by higher asphalt sales driven by the government spending, while asphalt price both at home and abroad is staying high.
