Daily top picks

Still inching back up

Positive sentiment from US markets in response to Trump’s selection for the Secretary of the Treasury and a fall in US bond yield will support the SET, while pressure from fund outflow is expected to slow after the appreciation of the dollar slowed and the MSCI rebalance ended yesterday. The index is expected to move up, with resistance at 1450-1455, while supports are at 1430-1440, which are expected to stand.

Today’s highlights

  • NESDC reported expansion in household debt in 2Q24 of 1.3%YoY to Bt16.32tn, falling to 89.6% of GDP, below 90%. It expressed concern about tight household budgets and high debt default, said it was necessary to make sure banks' use strict lending policies and guard against potential external debt reliance.
  • The Thai Automotive Industry Association has cut its 2024 vehicle production target from 1.7mn units to 1.5mn units, the lowest in four years. Production for domestic sale was cut from 550,000 to 450,000 units, and for exports from 1.15mn to 1.05mn units. It is watching for potential auto parts manufacturer factory closures.
  • The BoI reported on its visit to China (Nov 19-22), saying over 600 leading Chinese companies attended, a historic high. Chinese investors are looking to diversify production bases amid concerns over new potential US trade barriers.
  • DAMAC, a Dubai real estate investment firm, reports progress in data center investment with PROEN as a partner. It plans to expand capacity from 5MW to 20MW next year, targeting 100MW in 3 years after observing sharp demand growth.
  • The Ministry of Energy is preparing to propose measures to freeze gasoline and diesel prices and maintain electricity rates at Bt4.18/unit for January-April 2025. It must first consider the accumulated debt of EGAT and PTT.
  • The Minister of Energy says it is now holding talks on Phase 2 renewable energy electricity bids with the Council of State for a legal review, using data collected since 2022. It expects a conclusion by the end of this year.
  • Sources say Israel's war cabinet will today consider a temporary ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET will be range-bound with no new catalyst. The market expects US PCE in Oct to be stable from Sep at 0.2%MoM and Chinese Manufacturing PMI to rise slightly or be stable from Oct at 50.1. Funds are expected to continue flowing out from EMs, including Thailand and China, due to the fluctuation of the dollar and uncertainty about Trump’s tariff policies. Domestically, listed companies are in the middle of providing earnings outlook for 4Q24 and 2025. The market is also looking for additional stimulus from the government and Oct exports, which are expected to accelerate to 5.5%YoY from 1.1%YoY in Sep. Our strategy is “selective buy”.

Trading today

In the short term the SET is expected to be range-bound with no new catalyst. Funds are expected to flow out of EMs, while at home, companies are holding analyst meetings to provide earnings outlooks and the market is waiting for more stimulus. We recommend “Selective Buy” with four main themes:

  • Stocks expected to benefit from consumption and tourism stimulus and household debt relief measures. Recommend Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT, CRC, HMPRO and TNP), Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT) and Banking (BBL).
  • Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and on which we recommend outperform – GULF, OSP, CBG, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with following characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - BBL, ADVANC and HMPRO
  • For investors who are concerned about tension in the Middle East and want a stock to hedge the risk, we suggest PTTEP, an upstream oil company.

Daily top picks

GULF: 4Q24 profit is expected at another new high after capacity expansion. It has catalysts lying in benefits from the deal with INTUCH that will strengthen its balance sheet, the upcoming renewable plant auction and the cyclic move down in interest rates.

FTREIT: Price is down 4.5% over the last two months, making dividend yield interesting at 7.1% in FY2024 and 7.3% in FY2025. The fund also benefits from higher demand for industrial area in Thailand. We met with the fund manager, who said there are no signs clients are delaying decisions after the US election.
