1Q25: In the black, tariffs overhang

SCGP reported a net profit of Bt900mn in 1Q25, beating INVX and consensus, on a better recovery in margin than expected on lower RCP costs. 2Q25 is expected to benefit from restocking demand by US clients for some products, but we anticipate a medium-term overhang from US tariffs in 2H25 after the end of Trump’s 90-day pause. We stay Neutral with a new end-2025 TP of Bt17.5 (from Bt22), based on an updated 20x PE, or -1.5 SD below the 3-year mean.

1Q25 core earnings up QoQ on higher sales volume and lower costs. SCGP reported a net profit of Bt900mn in 1Q25, a plunge of 47.8% YoY but up from a net loss of Bt57mn in 4Q24, beating INVX by 18% and consensus by 11%. Behind this was a better gross margin than anticipated, driven by lower raw material costs (RCP) and lower coal energy prices. 1Q25 core earnings sank 45.7% YoY on a 5.1% YoY fall in revenue (integrated packaging -5% YoY, fibrous chain -2% YoY and recycling -15% YoY) from lower sales volume and ASP amid weak demand from China, the region’s major consumer. Additionally, interest expenses increased following the increased stake in Fajar in July 2024. However, core earnings improved QoQ on a 3% QoQ growth in revenue after the pulp plant resumed production following a shutdown in 4Q24. Lower RCP costs and coal prices led to an improvement in gross margin to 18% in 1Q25 from 13.8% in 4Q24.

Fajar Paper’s turnaround on track. Fajar Paper (99.7% stake, up from 55%, consolidated since July 2024), showed an improved negative EBITDA of IDR55bn in 1Q25 from a negative IDR102bn in 4Q24 and negative IDR14bn in 1Q24, driven by a 1.2% YoY and 3% QoQ rise in average selling prices. Fajar Paper's issuance of a maximum of 1bn (+40.5%) new shares is expected to be completed around June/July 2025, which will allow Fajar to use the funds from SCGP to repay high-interest debt, expected to reduce Fajar's interest expenses by ~Bt500mn p.a., which is part of SCGP's turnaround plan for Fajar, in addition to increasing local raw material sourcing. SCGP aims to reduce Fajar's D/E ratio to 1.0x from 2.1x in 4Q24.

Expect flat performance QoQ in 2Q25. We expect SCGP to benefit from short-term restocking demand due to Trump’s 90-day pause in reciprocal tariffs, despite the Songkran festival being a low season for Thailand (43% of revenue). Gross margin is expected to remain at 18% due to relatively stable packaging prices and RCP costs. However, we still expect a YoY drop in 2Q25 core earnings on lower sales and higher interest expenses.

Impact from US import tariffs. Revenue from exports to the US accounts for 5-10% of total revenue, including both direct and indirect exposure. The imposition of the US tariffs will take around a quarter to show a clearer effect.

2025 capex set at Bt13bn, with Bt8-10bn spent on growth, particularly aimed at expanding downstream integration. The rest will be spent on maintenance and improving efficiency. SCGP targets 2025 EBITDA of Bt18bn (in line with our projection) from Bt13.3bn in 2024, underwritten by recovery of packaging paper demand in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Key risks are a continued slow pace in China’s economy and geopolitical unrest raising coal cost. Key ESG risks are energy management, sustainability products, and high greenhouse gas emissions (E).
