SCGP reported a net loss of Bt57mn in 4Q24, below INVX and market estimates, due to a one-time adjustment of Bt260mn in the recycling business. 4Q24 core earnings were Bt34mn, plunging 97% YoY and 92% QoQ on a weak performance across all business units due to weaker packaging prices, a dissolving pulp plant maintenance shutdown, and wider losses from the recycling business. We expect earnings to stay weak YoY in 1H25 due to continued weak demand. We maintain Neutral with a 2025 TP of Bt22 based on 25x, or -1 SD below the 3-year historical PE mean.
4Q24 net loss of Bt57mn. This is SCGP’s first net loss since its IPO, plunging from a net profit of Bt1.2bn in 4Q23 and Bt577mn in 3Q24. The weak performance QoQ and YoY across all business units was primarily due to: 1) lower packaging prices amid intense competition that cut imports from ASEAN and subsequently lowered regional packaging paper prices, 2) increased loss contribution from Fajar Paper which, although down from Bt740mn in 3Q23 on increased sales volume (341,000 tons in 4Q24, +18% QoQ, -5% YoY), increased slightly QoQ on the full consolidation of Fajar Paper's financials from September 2024, 3) postponement of the annual maintenance shutdown for the dissolving pulp plant from 3Q24 to 4Q24 resulted in a ~20% decrease in production volume, and 4) increased losses in the recycling business on a one-time adjustment of Bt260mn and slow demand in Europe.
Outlook for 1H25. US trade restrictions are expected to continue to hurt in 1H25 with a decline YoY. However, a YoY recovery is expected in 2H25 off a low base and anticipated benefit from China's large-scale economic stimulus. SCGP aims to reduce costs by ~Bt1bn in 2025 through cost-saving initiatives and also expects Fajar Paper to reach EBTIDA breakeven in 2Q25, supported by debt restructuring, strategic partnerships, expansion into new markets and downstream business growth. These factors are expected to drive a recovery in 2H25.
2025 CAPEX has been set at Bt13bn, with Bt8-10bn spent on growth, particularly aimed at expanding downstream integration. The rest will be spent on maintenance and greater efficiency. SCGP targets 2025 EBITDA of Bt18bn (in line with our projection) from Bt13.3bn in 2024, underwritten by recovery of packaging paper demand in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
Fajar Paper's EGM approved a capital increase. On January 23, Fajar's EGM approved the issuing of a maximum of 1bn (+40.5%) new shares, price not yet announced; the process is expected to finalize within 2Q25. We believe the main reason for this capital increase is for SCGP to inject funds to reduce Fajar's debt. SCGP aims to reduce Fajar's D/E ratio to 1.0x from 2.06x in 3Q24. We believe this is also in preparation for the possible entry of strategic partners.
The company announced a 2H24 dividend of Bt0.3/share (XD April 1), implying a 3.6% annualized dividend yield.
Key risks are a continued slow pace in China’s economy and geopolitical unrest raising coal cost. Key ESG risks are energy management, sustainability products, and high greenhouse gas emissions (E).
