Market today | The SET moved up since mid-December and has not yet rested to reduce heat; we thus expect limited upside in the short term, with resistances at 1420 and 1425, while short-term supports are at 1407 – where the index would rest before going lower - and 1400. | Today’s highlights | • The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) expects the Thai economy to expand in 2024 but believes it faces high risk. The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) is concerned the economy might be in a slump for the next 2-3 years due to short-term government stimulus measures. The EIC is worried over various risk factors that could lead to slower, more fragile and uncertain economic growth. • The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects the year-end festivities to be more active than last year for both domestic and international tourists, generating ~Bt54bn in tourism revenue, up by 44%YoY. • The market is concerned about a slowdown in oil demand, while record production in 2023 by the United States and non-OPEC countries is expected to limit crude oil price increases. • Japan suffered a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan on New Year's Day, with a widespread tsunami warning issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency. • The Bank of Israel announced a reduction of its policy interest rate of 25bps, from 4.75% to 4.50%, the first rate cut in nearly four years due to the effect of the war on the economy. • Maersk issued a statement on Dec 31, indicating that a Houthi rebel attack on one of its cargo ships, the Maersk Hangzhou, has led it to suspend navigation through the Red Sea for 48 hours. | Strategy today | In the short term, the Thai stock market is expected move sideways up but upside is limited and volume expected to be low as the market emerges from the year-end holidays and waits for new catalysts. Our strategy is selective buy. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to able to move up, but upside is limited and trading volume will be low as the market is just coming out of long holidays and waiting for new catalysts. We recommend "selective buy" in themes with specific drivers: 1) Big-cap stocks in SET50 to be selected as investment targets as the TESG fund is set up. Our picks are classified into two groups: 1) companies with ESG rating of between "A" and "AAA" and price underperformed the SET last year - OR and AOT; and 2) companies with ESG rating of "AAA" that outperformed the SET last year with strong profit and dividend yield greater than 5% - PTT, KTB. 2) Stocks benefiting from declining bond yield - Commerce (BJC, CPALL and CPAXT), Healthcare (BDMS and BCH), Utilities (GULF), REIT (DIF), Property Development (AP) and Consumer Finance (TIDLOR). 3) Stocks that may be supported by short covering, up by 10% of trading value since Sep 23 and our recommendation - ADVANC and MINT. 4) Stocks benefiting from the e-refund measure allowing a personal income tax deduction on purchases of up to Bt50,000 between Jan 1-Feb 15, 2024 - CRC and HMPRO. In the short term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are expected to be materially affected by the planned rise in the minimum wage: Courier Services (KEX), Food (CPF, ZEN, GFPT and TU), Real Estate (LPN and PSH) and Electronic Components (HANA). In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG). | Daily top picks | BBL: Listed on the SETESG Index with an “AA” rating. 4Q23 profit is expected to grow by 64%YoY and 10%QoQ from higher NIM and lower ECL and expected to continue to grow in 2024 from lower credit cost, expanding NIM and loan growth. HMPRO: Listed on the SETESG Index with an “AA” rating. 4Q23 is expected to be the best quarter of the year, while the stock is expected to benefit the most from e-receipt stimulus as spending in its stores is generally higher per bill than others in the commerce sector. The stock price has not reflected the benefit from the stimulus yet. | Today’s reports | Bank – 4Q23F: Mostly up YoY, stable QoQ | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240102_E |
