MSCI Global Standard
Daily top picks
Hopes for a rate cut
The SET dived close to 1200 with no catalyst and trade war concerns dampening sentiment. Investors have hopes for a lean toward a rate cut by the MPC at its meeting today. Although the market expects no change, a signal for a rate cut down the road will aid recovery. Resistance is between 1215-1220; support is between 1190-1200.
Today’s highlights
• The Cabinet sent a letter to the BoT expressing its opinion on monetary policy, supporting a policy rate cut while noting the BoT must consider the inflation target of 1-3%. Today, we are following the MPC meeting to get hints regarding interest rate direction.
• The Prime Minister instructed all agencies to accelerate economic stimulus measures, targeting GDP growth of no less than 3.2% from 1Q25 onwards. She ordered solutions for falling agricultural product prices and relief measures for IUU fishing vessels.
• The Ministry of Commerce reports 13.6% YoY growth in Thailand's export value in January 2025, higher than market expectations and the seventh month of growth, supported by continued economic growth in trading partners and expanding production sectors. Imports grew 7.9% YoY, resulting in a trade deficit of US$1.8bn.
• Bloomberg reports that Indonesia and Apple have reached conditions to lift the iPhone 16 sales ban that has been in place for over five months. Apple will invest US$1bn and train local people in R&D.
• The SET announced plans to revise new listing criteria, reviewing free float requirements for SET and mai listings. For example, it may adjust the free float ratio to 17% from 20% to attract large companies and enhance competitiveness with foreign markets. It will hold public hearings until March 18.
• The US reported a fall in the consumer confidence index for February to 98.3, the lowest since June 2024 and below market expectations, reflecting increased concerns about the impact of various policies from Trump.
• Brent crude dropped 3% yesterday amid concerns that a trade war will affect global oil demand, while Trump confirmed he will proceed with import tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside; key resistance is at 1300. Macro factors are expected to be the main factors pushing the index: the US PCE index, which is likely to slow to 2.5% and keep the Fed from changing its stance, and China manufacturing and services PMIs, which are gradually improving. The BoT’s stance is to keep interest rate unchanged at 2.5%, which the market has already largely incorporated. 1Q25 profit is expected to show that the Thai stock market passed bottom in 2H24. We expect foreign money flow to improve, while the SET’s revision trading measure is expected to improve confidentiality and ease some concerns. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited, with key resistance at 1300. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Dividend plays that are expected have high dividend yield of above 3% for investors who want to generate cash flow on their portfolios – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPALL, HMPRO, BTG, ERW, AU and KLINIQ, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
CPALL: Seen as a defensive stock whose profit continues to grow. 4Q24 profit was higher than expected, growing 28% on seasonal factors and 31%YoY on strong SSS growth and wider margin driven by more sales of high-margin products. Additional stimulus and interest rate cut are seen as upside to our estimate.
GULF: There is a short-term catalyst from falling bond yield. 1H25 profit is expected to continue to grow strongly from capacity expansion. The acquisition of INTUCH is on schedule for 2Q25, which will help support the balance sheet and improve its chances in renewable energy auctions.
