Daily top picks
Pressured on all sides
The market is facing pressure from all directions – at home from issues related to specific companies and abroad from the trade war between the US and China. A technical rebound signal is expected in the short term, which will bring limit recover. Resistance is between 1270-1280, while there still is downside, with supports at 1250 and 1245.
Today’s highlights
• The Trade Policy and Strategy Office reports January's headline inflation rose 1.32%YoY, rising for the tenth month and above 1% for the second straight month. The increase was driven by higher fuel prices and rising food and beverage costs. 1Q25 inflation is expected to average 1.1-1.2%YoY.
• REIC says 4Q24 housing prices increased 0.8%, rising for the ninth quarter, while condominium prices rose 3.6%, the eighth quarter of a rise. This is attributed to higher costs for land, construction materials and labor.
• The Thai Chamber of Commerce University forecasts Bt5.2bn spending during the period around Makha Bucha and Valentine's Day, with Bt2.5bn during Makha Bucha (highest in four years) and Bt2.7bn for Valentine's Day. Economic recovery remains modest as Thai consumers remain cautious. Trade tensions in 1H25 are expected to be moderate with Thailand likely avoiding significant tariff increases.
• NEPC has terminated the power purchase agreement for the 480MW Nam Ngum 3 hydropower project in Laos, in which EGAT co-invested, due to project financing issues. Alternative power purchase agreements are expected to be sought as replacement.
• Trump plans to boost US oil production, raising investor concerns about potentially higher oil supply.
• The BoE voted 7-2 to cut interest rates by 25bps to 4.50%, meeting market expectations. This marks BoE's first rate cut this year amid concerns over UK economic slowdown.
• The Prime Minister is on an official visit to China, signing 14 bilateral MOUs to enhance cooperation in various sectors including economy, artificial intelligence, space technology and agriculture.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways with key resistance at ~1350 points. Although sentiment is positive in response to China’s stimulus package, strong profit at US companies and a strong dollar from gradual interest rate cuts, domestically there is no new catalyst to support the market. Exports face more risk due to US trade policy and low inflation, hindering Thai economic growth and leading the Thai market to underperform world markets. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to move sideways with main resistance at 1350. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Stocks expected to benefit from Chinese New Year shopping and from stimulus - Easy e-Receipt (Jan 16–Feb 28) and Bt10,000 handout – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (MINT AWC ERW and AOT).
2) To generate cash flow for portfolios: stocks offering high dividend yield of over 3% on 2024 earnings, with strong balance sheets and continued growth in 2025 – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
3) Earnings plays whose prices have not risen to reflect YoY and QoQ growth in 4Q24-1Q25 profit and generally are regular dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading ideas for high-risk investors: 1) stocks expected to raise dividend payout or do a share buyback on PBV lower than 1x and with high liquidity – PTT, KBANK and BBL; and 2) speculate on mid to small cap stocks whose prices have fallen YTD and are underperforming, but who are strong financially and whose earnings in 4Q24 and 2025 are expected to grow – AMATA, AU, BCH, BLA and TIDLOR.
Daily top picks
AOT: Profit will grow in tandem with the growing international arrivals. FY2025 profit is expected to grow 18%, based on 84mn international passengers (up 15%), and 1Q25FY core profit is expected to grow to Bt5.5bn (+18%YoY and +25%QoQ) due to high season.
BBL: BBL is expected to raise its dividend payout ratio, which will be a short-term catalyst to stock price. Valuation is most attractive among banks, trading at the lowest PER and PBV 2025F of 6.2x (peer avg. 8x) and 0.48x (peer avg. 0.8x), respectively, and asset quality risk is also the lowest among peers.
