Daily top picks

Still weak, no new catalyst

The SET is still sending negative signals, with no clear recovery sign. The main pressure is the Fed’s signal that it will slow its interest rate cuts, cutting only twice rather than the four expected; the market also has no new catalyst, limiting recovery. Resistances are at 1390 and 1400, while supports are at 1370 and 1364.

Today’s highlights

  • The final estimate for US 3Q24 GDP growth shows an expansion of 3.1% QoQ, higher than the previous estimate and accelerating from 2Q24 growth of 3.0% QoQ, driven by strong consumer spending and increased exports.
  • The BoJ decided to maintain policy rate at 0.25%, in line with market expectations, reaffirming that Japan's economic recovery will continue at a gradual pace.
  • The BoE kept its interest rate at 4.75%, also as anticipated, amid the highest inflation in eight months and higher-than-expected wage growth.
  • The Ministry of Finance plans to propose an Easy e-Receipt program to the Cabinet, allowing personal income tax deductions of up to Bt50,000 per person for the 2025 tax year. This is seen as positive for Commerce (CRC, BJC, TNP), Tourism (ERW, AWC, CENTEL, MINT if conditions are similar to earlier this year) and beverages (OSP, CBG).
  • China's leading oil company, Sinopec, estimates China's fuel consumption will peak at ~800mt in 2027, up from 750mt this year, while warning that China's oil market will face challenges from Trump’s return to office.
  • The OAE expects agricultural GDP to contract 1.1% this year due to volatile weather and floods but expects a rebound in 2025 to growth of 1.8-2.8% on increased output, sufficient water and higher export volume.
  • Bloomberg reported that Apple Inc. is close to receiving a license to sell the iPhone 16 in Indonesia after President Prabowo Subianto approved a US$1bn investment, which is expected to include the establishment of an AirTag manufacturing facility.

Strategy today

The SET looks volatile in the short-term and is waiting for a turning sign to stand above 1400. Market upside depends on China's economic data and buying in tax savings funds toward year’s end. Continued monitoring of US trade policies and the global economic slowdown is crucial. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy"

Trading today

In the short term, the SET is expected to be volatile, with upside hinging on China's economic data and purchase of tax savings funds at the end of the year. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:

  • Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with these characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - ADVANC, AP, BBL, BDMS and HMPRO.
  • Stocks benefiting from government consumption and tourism stimulus: Commerce (CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
  • Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Trading Idea for high-risk investors: Stocks that are recovering but prices lag - BEM, BDMS, MINT, AP.

Daily Top picks

BBL: The leading bank stock, with price drivers from: 1) the lowest valuation, 2) the lowest asset quality risk and 3) the highest loan growth potential, with loans expected to recover strongly in 4Q24. October loan growth was a strong 1.4% MoM, driven by foreign business loans and large corporate customer loans.

CRC: Positioned to benefit from stimulus that involves income tax deductions, now under consideration. Profit passed bottom in 3Q24, with 4Q24 expected to be the year’s best quarter, growing QoQ on seasonality and YoY from branch expansion and cost control. 2024 profit is expected to grow 7.8%.
