Daily top picks

Poor, wait for turning sign

The SET faced a push down to below 1400, generating a negative technical sign, with no sign of turnaround. Supports are at 1387 and 1375, while upper bound is limited at 1400-1410. Follow the MPC meeting today, which will be a catalyst if there is an interest rate cut, and the FOMC meeting tonight.

Today’s highlights

  • The US Department of Commerce reported November retail sales grew 0.7%MoM, higher than market expectations and accelerating from October.
  • Reuters reports that China’s leadership maintained its 2025 economic growth target at 5% and will adopt a more proactive fiscal policy. It plans to increase the country’s budget deficit by 1pp to 4% of GDP, about 1.3tn yuan, which was well-received during the CEWC meeting, though not officially announced.
  • The Cabinet approved the EEC Rayong area zoning of 2,662 rai for preparation for entertainment complex projects and approved a draft expropriation law for the Pink Line railway project from Khae Rai to Min Buri within four years.
  • The Cabinet approved a ministerial regulation in the Factory Act exempting solar power generation from the necessity to obtain permits to support small private sector access to clean energy.
  • The Minister of Tourism says 33.4mn foreign tourists have entered Thailand so far this year, growth of 27%YoY, with both short- and long-haul tourists regaining momentum.
  • The Thai Hotel Association proposed five government support measures: tourism stimulus, expense assistance, workforce skill enhancement, low-interest loans and benefits for standard-compliant operators.
  • The Rubber Authority of Thailand estimates rubber production in December will drop 24.8% or 140,000 tons due to heavy rain and flooding that has affected 5.5mn rai of rubber plantations in 11 provinces.
  • Follow the NBTC board's consideration of a special measure report on the TRUE-DTAC and 3BB-AWN merger, which has been rescheduled for review today.

Strategy today

The short-term SET outlook is volatile and is waiting for a turning sign to stand above 1400. Market upside depends on China's economic data and Fed rate cuts. The Thai market is watching the BoT meeting, at which it is expected to maintain rates, which will be a short-term pressure. A rate cut could lift the SET by 15-20 points. As we approach the year’s end, tax-savings fund purchases typically accelerate. Continued monitoring of US trade policies and the global economic slowdown is crucial. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy"

Trading today

In the short term, the SET is expected to be volatile, with upside hinging on China's economic data and the Fed’s stance. Domestic factors include the BoT meeting. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:

  • Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with these characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - ADVANC, AP, BBL, BDMS and HMPRO.
  • Stocks benefiting from government consumption and tourism stimulus: Commerce (CPALL, CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
  • Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Trading Idea for high-risk investors: Stand to benefit from lower interest rates - 1) REITs (LHHOTEL, FTREIT and DIF), 2) Retail (CPALL), 3) Banks (TISCO, KKP) with high HP loans or stocks that are recovering but prices lag - BEM, BDMS, MINT, AP.

Daily top picks

CRC: Positioned to benefit from stimulus that involves income tax deductions, now under consideration. Profit passed bottom in 3Q24, with 4Q24 expected to be the year’s best quarter, growing QoQ on seasonality and YoY from branch expansion and cost control. 2024 profit is expected to grow 7.8%.

FTREIT: Price is down 4.5% over the last two months, making dividend yield interesting at 7.1% in FY2024 and 7.3% in FY2025. The fund also benefits from higher demand for industrial area in Thailand. We met with the fund manager, who said there are no signs clients are delaying decisions after the US election.
