Slowing to wait and see, overall still good
The SET is expected to slow down and be range-bound between 1440-1460, with short-term technical signals cooling, as investors wait for the Fed chairman’s speech today to evaluate interest rate direction by the Fed and the political turmoil in South Korea. Overall, the index is expected to continue to climb, driven by tax deductible funds.
Today’s highlights
- After declaring martial law at 11 p.m. caused widespread turmoil, South Korea's President has lifted martial law after the parliament unanimously voted to block its implementation.
- Reuters reports that OPEC+ is likely to announce an extension of oil production cuts until the end of 1Q25 at Thursday's meeting (Dec 5), aiming to support oil prices. This is a change from the original plan to end production cuts at the end of Dec 2024.
- China’s Ministry of Commerce has banned the export of critical materials used for chip production to the US, in retaliation for restrictions on selling HBM processor chips to China.
- The Minister of Finance has instructed the NESDC to expedite tax structure adjustments, including reducing corporate income tax from 20% to 15% to enhance competitiveness and potentially increasing the value added tax (VAT) from the current 7% closer to the 10% ceiling, which is low against the global average of 15-25%.
- The BoT Governor expects the Thai economy to face high uncertainty in 2025, emphasizing that monetary policy must be resilient and use diverse tools. He stressed that interest rates alone cannot address all challenges and is preparing to introduce more debt relief measures for retail and SME sectors on Dec 11.
- The Minister of Tourism reports a slowing in foreign tourist arrivals last week, attributed to fewer Malaysian tourists due to flooding and a decline in long-haul tourists. However, tourist numbers are expected to pick up again in December.
- The EXIM forecasts growth of 1-3% in Thailand’s exports in 2025, with industrial food products expected to be the primary export category. In 2024, exports are projected to grow 3.5-4.0%, based on the good performance in 10M24.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways with psychological support at 1400. There may be some rebounds arising out of limited effects from external factors, stable US economic figures, with China’s trading expected to be pressured by concerns of tariffs and a slowdown in the global economy. Domestically, there is no new catalyst to stimulate investment, other than hopes for additional stimulus packages from the government. Our strategy is “selective buy”.
Trading today
In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as funds are likely to flow out from EMs on concerns over a possible trade war, while at home there is no new catalyst. We recommend “Selective Buy” with three main themes and one trading idea:
- Stocks expected to benefit from consumption and tourism stimulus and household debt relief measures. Recommend Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT, CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
- Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
- Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with following characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - BBL, ADVANC and HMPRO
- Trading Idea: investors who can accept high risk may speculate on stocks likely to be included in SET50 in 1H25 – BANPU, CCET, COM7 and SAWAD, and stocks expected to benefit from the floods in the South – HMPRO, CPALL and TASCO. Be cautious in trading in Healthcare, Automotive and Construction Materials, where 4Q24 earnings are looking weaker.
Daily top picks
BCH: 4Q24 should be the final quarter of concerns over payment of SC high-cost care, as the recent meeting was positive. The predetermined rate of Bt12,000/RW will be finalized on Dec 6. Core profit growth of 19% is expected in 2025, the strongest in the Healthcare sector.
CPALL: 4Q24 is expected to be the year’s best quarter, growing YoY and QoQ, backed by high season. SSS growth continues strong and margin continues to rise, driven by more sales of high-margin products. Upside lies in additional government stimulus and steps down in interest rate.
