Market today | The SET is expected to move between 1385-1394 as investors are waiting for US CPI, which will help to assess the Fed’s interest rate direction. If the index can break out, it may cause fluctuation, with the next support at 1380 and resistance at 1400. A break through that would be a good sign. | Today’s highlights | • Keep an eye on US inflation figures to determine the direction of the Fed's monetary policy as it is aiming at a 2% inflation target. • The EU is considering imposing trade restrictions on companies supporting Russia, with three of these companies located in China. • China and Indonesia aim to reduce nickel production by 100,000 tons this year to stem losses after nickel prices fell. They plan further production cuts if producers wish to boost prices and reduce the market surplus. • Yesterday, a merchant ship passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea was hit by missiles twice, claimed to be by the Houthi rebels, highlighting ongoing high tensions in the Red Sea. • India reported CPI index for Jan of 5.10%YoY, the lowest in three months, slowing from 5.69% in Dec but still within the Reserve Bank of India's inflation target of 2-6%. • The Prime Minister has scheduled a major digital wallet board meeting on Feb 15 to discuss four key items: responses from the Council of State, suggestions from the National Anti-Corruption Commission, along with the establishment of two subcommittees to expedite the crisis resolution project as defined by the government. The Prime Minister also announced the successful mediation of 12,000 cases (out of a total of 140,000 cases) in two months, reducing debt by Bt670mn. • The SET is preparing to introduce mechanisms to control short selling and program trading. It will present the study results at today's board meeting. | Strategy today | In the short term the SET is expected to still be range-bound with no new catalyst. Investors await the gradual release of 4Q23 earnings and fear US inflation will decrease less than expected. The strategy is “defensive and accumulate fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery”. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to be range-bound, lacking catalysts and awaiting 4Q23 earnings results. We recommend “accumulate defensive and fundamental stocks to wait for market recovery” in three main themes: 1) Investors who are concerned about market fluctuations are recommended to invest in defensive stocks that are expected to beat the market with beta below 1 and price outperformance vs. the SET YTD – ADVANC, AOT, BDMS and TISCO. 2) Short-term investors (3-4 months) who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks during dividend season, for stocks going XD between Mar–May 2024, with expected yield on 2023 (after deducting interim dividend) of over 5% - AP, BCP and KTB. For long-term investors who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks to generate consistent cash flow, with dividend yield expected at over 5% on 2024 - AH, AP, BCP, KTB, PTT and TTB. 3) Long-term investors are recommended to invest via DCA accumulation as now would be good timing since the SET has fallen significantly and risk is low and stocks are undervalued – BBL, BDMS, BEM, CPALL, PTT and SCC, all of which are in SET100 and are leaders in their industries with ESG ratings of AAA and AA, valuation lower than 10-year historical average and strong operating results. For the short term we recommend being cautious on stocks whose 4Q23 results may be weaker than expected – BJC, HMPRO, GLOBAL, ZEN, AU, CPF, BTG, AWC and SIRI. | Daily top picks | TOP: 4Q23 net profit is expected to be Bt2.7bn, up hugely YoY, and may lead 2023 net profit to beat market and INVX expectations. 2024 profit is likely to be strong, supported by good market GRM and PX product spread. Valuation: PBV 2024, is at 0.6x (-1.6S.D. of 5-year historical) with and expected dividend yield of 5%. BGRIM: The company benefits from expected widening SPP margin resulting from declining fuel cost, with cheaper LNG and a greater proportion of natural gas from the Gulf of Thailand as Erawan gas field ramps up production. This will underwrite solid 2024 operating results. Sentiment is also burnished by the fact that bond yield has passed peak. | Today’s reports | CRC – Outlines 2024 targets; preview 4Q23 EPG – 3QFY24: In line with market estimates GGC – 4Q23: Profit lifted by an extra gain GLOBAL – 4Q23: In line with INVX, above consensus PTTGC – 4Q23: Above estimates on extra items | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240213_E |
