Market today | The SET is expected to weaken after the US announced higher CPI than expected in March, creating greater uncertainty over the timing of the Fed’s rate cut. Supports are at 1400 and 1390, while overall support is between 1380-1385. Indicators are still good if the index can stay above supports. Resistances are at 1410 and 1420. | Today’s highlights | • US CPI in Mar rose 3.5%YoY, while core CPI rose 3.8%YoY, higher than expected, raising concerns the Fed may not cut rates in Jun. • The FOMC minutes for the Mar 19-20 meeting show the committee is worried that inflation may not slow down to the 2% target soon, and that it may need to keep the rate higher for longer than expected. • The EIA reported an increase in US crude oil inventory of 5.8mn bbl last week, above forecast. Investors are concerned about escalating Middle East conflict after reports three sons of a Hamas leader were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. • Fitch Ratings downgraded China's outlook to negative from stable, citing the possibility the government may face rising debt while reviving an economy hit by the property crisis. • The MPC voted 5-2 to keep the policy rate at 2.50%, saying the economy is expected to grow faster than last year, aided by government spending and stimulus measures. It expects inflation to return to the target range by year-end. • The government announced a Bt500bn digital wallet scheme in 4Q24 for 50mn eligible recipients, those with annual income below Bt840,000 or deposits under Bt500,000. This is expected to boost GDP by 1.2-1.8% with funds coming from borrowing, the BAAC and FY2024-25 budgets. • The Thai Chamber of Commerce reported a fall in the consumer confidence index in Mar to 63.0, the first fall in eight months, reflecting concerns over a slow Thai recovery, higher energy prices, a global slowdown, and the prolonged Middle East conflict. | Strategy today | In the short-term, the Thai stock market is likely to recover on expectation of recovery in the economies and manufacturing in China and the US. At home, clarification after digital wallet board meeting is expected to stimulate investment atmosphere in the Thai capital market. The strategy is “Selective Buy”. | Trading today | In the short term the SET is likely to recover but with limited upside. We recommend “Selective Buy” in four main themes: 1) Speculative stocks after Brent went above US$85/bbl on concerns of tightening supply from the tension in the Middle East, with hopes that strong economies in the US and China will support demand. For high risk-takers, we recommend trading PTTEP (long-term oil price up by US$1/bbl raises target price by Bt5/share) and TOP (refinery margin and inventory gain), while it is negative to oil retailing (low marketing margin) and the aviation sector (higher cost). However, if Brent exceeds US$95/bbl, we recommend taking profit. 2) Stocks that benefit from seasonally improving tourism during the long Songkran holidays, with the government organizing 21 days of events (April 1-21). Data for the past thirteen years shows tourism stocks provide good returns in April, at an average of 2.5%MoM. – AOT, ERW, MINT and CPALL. 3) Stocks that benefit from recovery in manufacturing (especially China) and whose profit has bottomed but this is not yet reflected in stock price – GFPT, KCE, SCGP and IVL. 4) Speculative stocks on the beginning of a downtrend in interest rate, especially if Thai inflation rate in March continues low – Finance (TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF). | Daily top picks | BJC: It is one that will benefit from the digital wallet scheme. This will help lift sales and profit from 4Q24 (when it starts up) as 20% of its sales are from small-sized BigC B2B and “Donjai” shops, the latter of which are supplied by BigC. BEM: Profit is recovering the best in the land transport sector and stock price has catalysts: a fare increase on the MRT, expected to be announced around the beginning of June, a final decision on the West Orange Line and the double-deck expressway project in 2H24. | Today’s reports | Commerce – Digital wallet a nice bonus AEONTS – Pressured by regulation headwinds | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240411_E |
