Preview 1Q25F: Down QoQ on sales volume
Market pessimism on oil price has clouded share price performance over the past three months, pulling it down 11% to a one-month low, though still beating the SET’s fall of 20%, especially after OPEC+ announced it would increase oil production in May at a faster pace than expected. Despite the near-term souring in market sentiment on upstream oil companies, the short-term overreaction to supply fears opens a window to increase position in the stock, in our view. PTTEP’s earnings are protected by a more stable gas price due to the lag before price adjustment and sales volume is expected to increase over the next five years. We revise down our DCF-based TP to Bt162 from Bt164 to reflect lower oil price assumptions for 2025-26, while long-term Brent price is intact at US$65 from 2027 based on the current forward curve. We stay Outperform on the tempting discount to DCF valuation and healthy balance sheet with net D/E of only 0.1x.
1Q25F down QoQ on lower sales volume. We expect 1Q25F net profit (release on Apr 25) to fall 11% YoY and 9% QoQ to Bt16.6bn on lower sales volume, though ASP is likely to edge up QoQ. We expect the impact from non-recurring items to be muted due to less volatile oil price and FX, as well as a small oil hedging position. Behind the 5% QoQ fall in sales volume to 475kBOED is the planned maintenance shutdown of several operating gas fields in Thailand, notably Block G2/61 (Bongkot), and lower oil sales volume from projects in Oman and Algeria. This is in line with guidance in Jan 2025 when it announced 2024 results. Sales volume in 1Q25 is expected to be the year’s lowest on the most downtime for operations in the Gulf of Thailand.
Slight increase in ASP expected in 1Q25. We expect ASP to edge up 0.5% QoQ but fall 2.5% YoY to US$46/BOE, based on gas price of US$5.95/mmbtu (+0.8% YoY, +1.5% QoQ) and price of liquid products (oil and condensate) of US$72.7/BOE (-8.4% YoY, +1% QoQ). Note that the discount on average price of liquid products has widened to US$3/BOE vs. the normal US$1-2/BOE due to the lag before price adjustment for oil assets in the Middle East and Algeria. This means it is still feeling the effect of the low oil price in 4Q24. Although we expect unit cost to increase 2.6% QoQ to slightly above US$30/BOE due to volume impact, EBITDA margin is expected to stay above 75% in 1Q25, in line with the company’s long-term target of 70-75%.
2Q25F and 2025F outlook. Sales volume in 2Q25 is expected to rise QoQ on less maintenance in Thailand and more oil loading in Oman and Algeria. Management guided that sales volume will continue to increase in 2H25 and it stands by its 2025 sales volume target of 500-510kBOED, up from 489kBOED in 2024. The key risk is ASP, which could be eroded by the current oil price weakness, while gas price is expected to soften marginally. INVX has revised 2025-26 oil price assumptions and this leads us to revise down our net profit forecast for 2025 by 3% and 2026 by 5%.
TP is trimmed to Bt162 to reflect new oil price assumptions. With lower oil price assumptions in 2025-26, we trim TP (end-2025) from Bt164 to Bt162 but still base it on LT Dubai of US$63/bbl and Brent of US$65/bbl from 2027. We continue to keep our volume assumption at 3% below guidance to provide a margin of safety.
Risk factors: 1) Volatile crude oil price, 2) higher unit cost, 3) asset impairment and
4) regulatory change on GHG emissions. Key ESG risk factors are the environmental impact of its business and adapting to transition to clean energy.
