Bearish guidance, active capital management

At the analyst meeting, KKP gave more bearish guidance than expected on asset quality with mute loan growth and better NIM. It intends to be more active in capital management both via a hike in dividend payout and another treasury stock program. We now expect 2025 earnings to slip and stay Neutral with an unchanged TP of Bt50 in view of its good dividend yield.

More bearish asset quality guidance than expected. KKP expects NPL ratio to be 4.1-4.3% in 2025 from 4.2% (its own calculation) in 2024, with rising asset quality risk from small SME and home loans. For HP loans, it expects NPL inflow to slow as a result of a stricter credit policy. It targets credit cost (including loss on sale of repossessed cars) at 2.2-2.4% in 2025 (vs. 2.3% in 2024), which is higher than our earlier forecast. We thus raise our 2025F credit cost by 5 bps to 2.2% (-10 bps). Loss on sale of repossessed cars is expected to ease as used car prices bottom out and it makes fewer repossessions. At this point, it has ~Bt1.4bn loans (4,000 accounts) that are eligible for the “You Fight, We Help” measure.

Targets zero loan growth. KKP targets flat loan growth in 2025 after a contraction of 8% in 2024, with an emphasis on asset quality rather than growth. It will shift its focus to corporate loans. We raise our 2025F loan growth to 0% from -2%.

Expect better NIM. KKP targets loan spread at 4.8-4.9% in 2025 vs. 4.8% (its own calculation) in 2024. It expects lower cost of funds in 2025 as interest rates begin to cycle down plus an increase in the proportion of current and savings deposits. We forecast a rise in NIM of 9 bps in 2025 and 10 bps in 2026, assuming the policy rate is cut by 75 bps in 2025.

Sustainable non-NII? A 7% rise in 2024 non-NII was mainly due to a sharp rise in FVTPL gain on financial instruments from Bt441mn in 2023 to Bt1.15bn in 2024, the highest in twelve years. As such gains are tied to the capital market and thus are volatile, sustaining non-NII is very challenging. We forecast a 2% decrease in non-NII in 2025, assuming a drop in FVTPL gain to Bt800mn in 2025 from Bt1.15bn in 2024 and a 3% growth in net fee income.

More active in capital management. KKP intends to be more active in capital management, with a hike in dividend payout and another treasury stock program. Assuming a hike in dividend payout ratio to 53.5% on 2024 from 46.7% on 2023, we raise our 2024F DPS by Bt1 to Bt3.15 (Bt1.9 for 2H24), equivalent to a good dividend yield of 5.8% (3.5% for 2H24).

Expect weaker earnings in 2025. We cut our 2025F by 2% after adjusting our credit cost assumption. We now look for a slip of 2% in 2025F earnings on lower NII (from a sharp loan contraction in 2024) and smaller FVTPL gain.

Maintain Neutral rating and TP. We keep our Neutral rating with an unchanged TP of Bt50 (based on 0.65x PBV for 2025F).

Key risks: 1) Asset quality risk from uneven economic recovery, 2) falling used car prices, 3) volatile capital market and 4) ESG risk on market conduct.
