GPSC reported a 2Q25 net profit of Bt2bn, which beat INVX by 9% and consensus by 13% on FX gain and a higher contribution from JVs than expected, as they recorded huge one-time FX gains and an increase in deferred tax assets. 2H25 core earnings are expected to be lower than in 1H25 on the absence of these large one-time gains plus a reduced Ft rate. We have revised up our 2025-26 core earnings forecasts to reflect higher JV income and a lower gas cost assumption. We are maintaining our Neutral rating, with a mid-2026 DCF-based TP of Bt41 (up from Bt31), based on a WACC of 6.5% and long-term growth of 0.5%
2Q25 beats expectations on one-time items. GPSC reported a net profit of Bt2bn in 2Q25, 9% above INVX and 13% higher than consensus on a Bt301mn FX gain and a higher-than-expected share of profit from JVs. These JVs had one-time gains, including a Bt630mn FX gain from the CFXD wind farm in Taiwan and a Bt190mn increase in deferred tax assets from Avaada Energy. Excluding one-time items, core earnings failed to meet our forecast on: 1) lower margins in the IPP business after the Sriracha plant's contract with EGAT expired, 2) reduced SPP margins due to a reduced Ft rate, and 3) a retroactive gas cost from PTT of ~Bt90mn.
To focus more on data center investment. GPSC’s management sees an additional electricity demand of 800–1,000 MW for data centers in Thailand and is exploring potential joint ventures in the data center business in both Thailand and India. A key concern for future data center investments in Thailand is the potential insufficiency of the power transmission grid. This limitation does not exist in India, so the company is also considering an investment there, which would create synergy with Avaada Energy's high-capacity expansion, especially in green electricity.
2H25 core earnings expected to soften HoH. While 1H25 core profit accounted for 60% of our full-year forecast, we expect core earnings to soften in 2H25 due to a lower Ft rate. We also anticipate lower contributions from the CFXD wind power and Avaada without the huge one-time gains recorded in 2Q25. This will, however, be partially offset by the potential for lower gas costs. GPSC anticipates gas costs in 2025 will be Bt310-315/mmBTU, a decrease from its previous forecast of Bt320-330/mmBTU (excluding retroactive gas costs from PTT). For 2026, the price is expected to drop further to around Bt300/mmBTU.
2025-26 earnings revision. We have revised up our core profit forecast by 12% for 2025 and 4% for 2026. This reflects the one-time gains from CFXD (FX gain) and Avaada Energy (increase in deferred tax assets) in 2Q25, as well as a lower gas cost assumption of Bt315/mmBTU for both 2025 and 2026 from our previous assumptions of Bt340/mmBTU for 2025 and Bt330/mmBTU for 2026.
Action and recommendation. We maintain our Neutral rating on GPSC. We expect to see weaker earnings in 2H25 due to a lower Ft rate, as the government works to reduce electricity tariffs, and the absence of the large one-time gains that were recorded in 2Q25. We have rolled our target price to mid-2026. The new TP of Bt41 (from Bt31) is based on a DCF valuation (WACC: 6.5%, and LT growth: 0.5%).
Risks. Higher than expected fuel cost, delays in Ft adjustment, lower return on new investments and regulatory changes regarding GHG emissions. Key ESG risk is the environmental impact from its exposure to fossil fuels.
