4Q24: Stock gain boosted net profit

Net profit was Bt150mn in 4Q24 reversing the sequential losses in the first three quarters of 2024, backed by Bt290mn stock gain. This came largely from the biodiesel business on concerns of a CPO supply shortage, which lifted CPO and biodiesel prices in 4Q24. Core profit was still in the red at Bt216mn in 4Q24 vs. a loss of Bt34mn in 4Q23 and Bt128mn in 3Q24, on a fall in EBITDA margin to 1.9% in 4Q24 from 5.8% in 4Q23 and 5.3% in 3Q24, hurt by weak biodiesel (ME) spread and loss contribution from the JV in the ethanol business. This brought a net loss of Bt265mn in 2024, slightly worse than the loss of Bt202mn in 2023, despite a huge inventory gain. Excluding impact from inventory gain/loss and other extra items, core earnings showed a loss of Bt607mn, sinking from profit of Bt71mn in 2023. We cut our TP to Bt4.50, based on 0.5x PBV (2025F), but upgrade to Neutral after a 53% plunge in share price in the past 12 months against a turnaround in 2025F to profit on a better FA business and lower loss contribution from associates and the JV.

Methyl ester (biodiesel): boosted by stock gain. EBITDA contribution from ME surged 47% YoY and 175% QoQ to Bt184mn on a Bt145mn stock gain as CPO and B100 prices jumped on market anxiety of a supply shortage prior to harvest in Mar-Apr. Excluding the stock gain, adjusted EBITDA fell 51% YoY and 36% QoQ to Bt39mn from a lower adjusted EBITDA margin to 1.2% in 4Q24 vs. 2.2% in 3Q24. Stiff competition continued to pull sales volume to an 8-year low of 67kt (-8% YoY, flat QoQ) which kept utilization rate at only 54% in 4Q24 vs the average of 62% over the past two years.

Fatty alcohol: adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 4-year low on high feedstock cost. FA segment EBITDA contribution fell 23% QoQ to Bt148mn on a 7.6ppt drop in adjusted EBITDA margin to a four-year low of 2.9% despite a 3% QoQ rise in sales volume from market restocking ahead of the holidays in 4Q24/1Q25. The adjusted EBITDA margin was hit by a sharp 87% YoY and 32% QoQ increase in feedstock cost (CPKO), while fatty alcohol price rose at a slower pace. Demand for CPKO was driven by market anxiety on the impact of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which was planned to take effect on December 30, 2024, but which was later postponed to end-2025.

All loans repaid in 2024. GGC has become a debt-free company after prepaying all borrowings by the end of 2024 as it has new investment plans under review. This will save Bt70-80mn in financing cost annually, while credit line with banks is still in place if required. The company plans to focus on high-value biochemical products, fatty alcohol ethoxylate (FAEO) via a 67% capacity expansion in its 50%-held JV Thai Ethoxylate to 200ktpa, which started up in 4Q24.

Earnings turnaround expected in 2025F; upgrade to Neutral. We expect the FA segment and key associate, Thai Ethoxylate, to continue to drive earnings growth in 2025F. We expect Bt100 product spread to be stable YoY, though still low due to high CPO cost and weak B100 demand. Further support will be provided by the lower financing cost after it repaid all loans. Nonetheless, we cut TP from Bt5.20 to Bt4.50, based on 0.5x PBV (2025F) while upgrading our rating to Neutral after a 53% plunge in share price over the past 12 months. The TP implies 3x EV/EBITDA (2025F), much lower than the 5-year average of 10.6x.

Risk factors: Volatile CPO and CPKO prices may cause stock loss and lower product spread. The government’s wobbly policy on the biodiesel mandate for domestic high-speed diesel also hurts demand for ME in the medium term.
