Broiler players to lead 3Q25F sector earnings
Broiler players will lead sector earnings (up YoY, QoQ) in 3Q25F, with robust export demand and lower feed costs offsetting a slight decline in local broiler prices, though these remained above breakeven. In turn, swine players will see earnings slip QoQ, as local swine prices dipped below breakeven in Sep from slower seasonal consumption, labor shortages and increased supply. Overseas swine prices also declined, pressured by ASF-related supply dumping in Vietnam and abundant supply in China. Our top picks are GFPT and TU, with GFPT showing the strongest growth in 3Q25F, and both companies positioned to benefit on the weakening in the THB in 4Q25TD.
Declining spot feed costs in 3Q25. In 3Q25, good crop conditions led spot local corn cost down to a 4-year low of Bt10/kg (-14% YoY, -5% QoQ) and imported soybean meal down to a 5-year low of Bt14.4/kg (-29% YoY, -11% QoQ). Given the usual 3-4 months of feed inventory kept by Thai livestock operators, we thus expect lower blended actual feed costs in 4Q25 (-7% QoQ, -19% YoY).
Local livestock prices down in 3Q25. Swine prices have fallen to the year’s low at Bt52-55/kg now (below breakeven cost at the gross profit level for big players of Bt55-60/kg), Bt59/kg in Sep (-19% YoY, -16% MoM) and Bt68/kg in 3Q25 (-5% YoY, -21% QoQ) from: 1) seasonally softer demand in the rainy season and ahead of the vegetarian festival (Oct 21-29); 2) labor shortages at slaughterhouses in Thailand, where labor is chiefly from Cambodia and the border conflict led many to return home, disrupting the supply chain; 3) additional supply, induced by 1H25’s high price base (Bt83/kg) given about six months for the pig fattening cycle. Broiler prices have edged down to Bt37-38kg now (slightly above breakeven cost at Bt37/kg), Bt38/kg in Sep (-10% YoY, -6% MoM) and Bt40/kg in 3Q25 (-7% YoY, flat QoQ), hit by seasonally softer demand, but the drop was less than for local swine price upon solid Thai export broiler sales by listed operators.
… but heading back up in late 4Q25. Looking ahead, after the vegetarian festival, we expect local prices to edge up from seasonally higher consumption and upcoming government stimulus (a state welfare card top-up and Khon La Khrueng Plus in Nov-Dec). At the current livestock price level, we are more positive on profitability in the broiler unit than the swine unit. An improvement in local swine prices from the current below-cost breakeven level is expected, although it may be gradual due to high supply. The situation will be monitored to assess the effectiveness of industry players collaborating to keep supply under control and better balance it with demand, which is expected to gradually increase over the next 4–6 months.
Local swine players working together to stabilize market. In September, the National Swine Raisers Association of Thailand took action to stabilize the pork market. Actions included: 1) a piglet cycle reduction program, where 100,000 piglets were immediately redirected into roasted pig production to ease market pressure for the following four months; 2) cooperation among major swine producers to keep pork in cold storage for six months, effectively delaying release into the market; 3) a “2 kg pork for Bt100” campaign, aimed at stimulating domestic consumption, effective Oct 1; 4) a slaughter weight limit of 110kg/head to prevent excess meat production.
Overseas swine price down in 3Q25. Swine price in Vietnam has fallen to VND55,000/kg now and VND59,670/kg in 3Q25 (-3% YoY, -12% QoQ vs cost breakeven at VND44,500/kg) from an ASF-led swine supply dump; swine price in China has fallen to CNY13/kg now and CNY14/kg in 3Q25 (-29% YoY, -5% QoQ vs cost breakeven at CNY14.5/kg) on huge supply amid moderate demand.
Limited impact from Thai-Cambodian conflict on labor in 3Q25. All players employ some Cambodian workers in their Thai operations: 20% of total workers in Thailand for GFPT, 8-9% for CPF, 8% for BTG, and 0.5% for TU. Though about 50% of the Cambodian workers in Thailand returned home in August after the border conflict intensified, all players have replaced those who left with local Thai and workers from Myanmar and Laos. This led to little change in labor cost and importantly, production was not disrupted.
Top picks GFPT and TU. We revise up GFPT’s 2025F by 5%, factoring in a heathy broiler margin from robust exports amid lower feed costs; we cut 2025F for CPF by 8% and BTG by 13% as we factor in weaker than expected local swine prices and margin. GFPT (rating upgraded to Outperform) is our pick as it will exhibit the sector’s best 3Q25F (up YoY, QoQ) off a wider margin, with a potential positive on better local livestock prices later this year from seasonality and stimulus. The weakening THB in 4Q25TD will be positive to 4Q25F earnings for export players GFPT and TU.
Key risks. Weak prices from fragile purchasing power and more supply, high feed costs and a strong THB. Key ESG risks are GHG emission, waste & water management (E), customer welfare, product quality, health & safety policies (S).
