Cut TPs to factor in the trade war risk
Taking into account the trade war risk, we trim our sector earnings by 2-6% as we raise credit cost and cut loan growth forecasts, offsetting a slight cut in cost of funds forecast to factor in more policy rate cuts. This leads to a 4-14% cut in TPs. We keep TIDLOR as the sector’s top pick as it is trading at the cheapest valuation and we expect moderate earnings growth in 2025. We add MTC as another pick as it is positioned to report strong earnings growth.
Raise 2025F credit cost to factor in the trade war. INVX cut 2025F GDP to 1.4% from 2.5% to factor in the trade war. We thus raise 2025F credit cost for consumer finance companies under our coverage by 5 bps. We now forecast a 15 bps fall in the sector’s credit cost in 2025, with the largest fall at MTC at 16 bps. Amidst the economic slowdown, we prefer secured loan operators (MTC, TIDLOR and SAWAD) to unsecured loan operators (AEONTS, KTC). From our standpoint, the asset quality risk from the trade war will factor most heavily on AEONTS as it has the highest exposure to factory workers, who may face layoffs as a result of the trade war. We also concerned about TIDLOR, which has the highest exposure to truck loans (15-16% of total loans), where borrowers may be hit by weaker exports.
Cut loan growth forecast. We cut 2025F loan growth forecasts for consumer finance operators except MTC, who now target an acceleration in loan growth in 2025 of 1-2 ppt. We expect them to return to cautious mode and abandon their earlier planned relaxation of credit policy. We expect all consumer finance operators except MTC to see a recovery in loan growth in 2025 after the slow growth in 2024. We expect MTC to be the only one where loan growth will decelerate from 15% in 2024 (vs. the sector average of 4%) to 13% in 2025 (vs. the sector average of 7%), still the highest in the sector.
Minimal benefit from more policy rate cuts. INVX expects the BoT to cut the policy rate three more times to 1.25% in response to the trade war, lower than the previous forecast of 1.5%. We thus trim our cost of funds forecast by 1-2 bps in 2025 and 4-5 bps in 2026. Cost of funds for consumer finance companies is expected to rise in 1H25 as they roll over debentures at a higher cost and be stable in 2H25 before easing in 2026. We expect rising cost of funds to pull the sector’s NIM down 20 bps in 2025, then rise 10 bps in 2026 after phasing in the lower cost of funds.
Trim 2025F earnings. We thus trim our 2025 earnings forecasts by 2-6%. In 2025, we now expect MTC to have the strongest earnings growth at 16%, followed by TIDLOR at 12%, SAWAD at 5% (EPS -4%), AEONTS at 4% and KTC at zero (dragged by rising opex from a major IT upgrade).
Cut TP. We cut the TPs of consumer finance companies by 4-14% to reflect rising asset quality risk from the trade war. Our new TPs are: Bt120 for AEONTS, Bt34 for KTC, Bt51 for MTC, Bt18 for TIDLOR and Bt35 for SAWAD.
TIDLOR and MTC as sector picks. We keep TIDLOR as the sector’s top pick as it is trading at the cheapest valuation against expected moderate earnings growth in 2025. We add MTC as another pick on the back of the strong earnings growth.
Key risks: 1) Asset quality risk from an economic downturn as a result of the trade war, 2) credit cost risk from falling used vehicle prices, 3) rising competition from banks and upcoming virtual banks, and 4) ESG risk from market conduct and regulatory risk.
