พ. 2568 (CRC, HMPRO)
Narrower SSS drop; cost inflation contained so far
Sector SSS has contracted 2% YoY in March to date, down at a slower pace than the 4% YoY in Jan-Feb, on stronger demand for beverages & appliances as the weather heats up, as consumers stock up, and no repeat of the high base from the E-Receipt program in Jan-Feb. Supply chains remain stable with minor delivery delays and largely unchanged product prices. Rising diesel costs have had little impact so far, and it has plans in place to mitigate this. The watchpoint is electricity tariff, as a late‑year increase could bring 3–4% downside risk to earnings. Our picks are CPALL, HMPRO, GLOBAL.
Narrower SSS contraction in March to date. Sector SSS is still contracting, but narrower, at -2% YoY in March to date (vs -4% YoY in January–February), due to: 1) hotter weather driving stronger beverage sales (CPALL) and electrical appliance sales (HMPRO); 2) consumers are stocking up, boosting sales in cash & carry and hypermarket formats (CPAXT, BJC) on concerns about product shortages or price hikes from geopolitical risks; 3) a slight pick-up in government investment spending boosting construction material retailers (DOHOME, not rated); 4) the absence of last year’s high base from the E-Receipt program as in Jan–Feb 2025 (CRC, HMPRO).
Supply chain manageable; product prices mostly unchanged. Across the sector, inventory management remains stable. Only minor delivery delays have been reported due to longer truck refueling times, but there are no material supply disruptions. Product pricing has remained broadly steady. Steel prices have inched up; construction‑related plastics (<1% of sales, i.e., PVC pipes and plastic doors) are preparing for small price adjustments. Some chemical and oil-related products (<1% of sales) face some brand-specific shortages, but retailers can substitute other brands. Prices in other categories are unchanged, and any cost increases would likely be passed through to selling prices.
Limited logistics cost impact so far; keeping an eye on electricity cost. Logistics. The recent modest rise in diesel costs has had limited impact on retailers. Transportation costs from suppliers to distribution centers can generally be passed through to suppliers (for all retailers, except for CPALL), while last‑mile delivery from distribution centers or stores to customers is absorbed by the retailers. Mitigation measures include raising minimum order values for delivery and/or adjusting selling prices if diesel prices rise further. Electricity. The electricity tariff in Thailand is set at Bt3.88/unit for Jan-April 2026. Based on recent statements and ongoing deliberations by the ERC, there is a very high chance that the government will freeze or subsidize electricity rates in May-August 2026 to mitigate the sharp rise in fuel and energy costs caused by global market volatility. If the full‑year electricity tariff increases by 8-13% from Bt3.88/unit (our earnings base case) to Bt4.2–4.4/unit (assuming stable tariff rate in Jan-Aug and an increase in Sep–Dec), we roughly estimate that sector earnings could face a 3–4% downside. The largest hit would be to BJC and CPAXT, with HMPRO and GLOBAL hit the least.
Top picks: CPALL, HMPRO and GLOBAL. Our pick is CPALL as poised to report the sector’s best 1Q26F earnings (only sector player showing earnings growth QoQ and YoY, backed by higher CVS sales and margin). We also like HMPRO and GLOBAL, due to potentially improved SSS in 2Q26F of 2Q25’s low SSS base (SSS contraction in double digits YoY) from adverse weather. Hotter weather will boost our picks’ beverage sales (CPALL) and electrical appliance sales (HMPRO, GLOBAL) further.
Key risks are changes in government policies and purchasing power. Key ESG risks are energy & waste management, sustainable products (E) and product quality management, labor practices and data privacy (S).
