Weak SSS to weigh on 4Q25F earnings

Sector share price fell 8% over a month, underperforming the SET by 7%, pricing in weak 4Q25F earnings hit by softer SSS than expected off last year’s high base from the digital wallet (Oct 24) and renovation demand after flooding in the North (Oct-Nov 24), fragile purchasing power and sentiment, with floods in the South, and intensified Thai-Cambodian border conflict. In early 2026F, SSS is set to remain weak (but better than 4Q25F), with the absence of shopping tax break and high foreign tourists as seen in early 1Q25 amid better sentiment from the Thai general election (Feb 26), then improving from low/normal base for the rest of 2026F. Our picks are CPALL, HMPRO and GLOBAL.

SSS in 4Q25F weakened. In 4Q25F, sector SSS is believed to have contracted 3.1% YoY (vs -2.2% YoY in 3Q25), hit by 1) fragile purchasing power, fewer international tourists, and lower farm income YoY; 2) last year’s high base from the digital wallet (in the first week of Oct 2024) for supermarkets and hypermarkets and repair and renovation demand after the floods in the north (Oct-Nov 2024) for home improvement retailers; 3) soft consumption sentiment from the period of mourning beginning in late October, floods in the south in late November, the intensified Thai-Cambodian border conflict and dissolution of parliament in December.

Impact from flooding in the south in 4Q25. From Nov 22, 2025, retailers reported temporary store closures due to severe flooding in Hat Yai and surrounding areas. At the peak, the number of closed stores accounted for less than 1% of sales for CPALL, CPAXT, BJC, and CRC, around 2% for GLOBAL, and 2–3% for HMPRO. After the water receded in late November, most stores affected by flooding gradually reopened. All companies under coverage have all-risk insurance coverage (asset damage & business interruption), except for GLOBAL, whose insurance covered only asset damage. SSS from home improvement retailers grew MoM for stores in the area surrounding the flood in Dec.

Impact from intensified Thai-Cambodian border conflict in 4Q25. Sales from stores in Cambodia account for only about 1–2% of total revenue for GLOBAL, CPALL, CPAXT and BJC, with all stores open. At the peak of the Thai-Cambodian border conflict in December, retailers with stores near the Thai-Cambodian border reported temporary closures of branches located near disputed checkpoints, representing roughly 1% of each company’s revenue. In Jan, some stores have gradually reopened, with some shortening the hours of operation in the stores in the area.

2026F SSS outlook. In early 2026F, we expect SSS to remain weak, though better than 4Q25F, with no shopping tax break nor the greater number of international tourists seen in Jan-Feb 2025, though sentiment has been brightened by the Thai general election (Feb 26). For the remainder of 2026F, sector SSS should be better, supported by last year’s low sales base caused by unusually heavy rainfall and low tourists, with potential new stimulus from the incoming government.

Top picks: CPALL, HMPRO and GLOBAL. With weaker-than-expected SSS, we expect some 4Q25 sector earnings downside, notably for retailers whose margins are highly sensitive to SSS growth (supermarkets/hypermarkets). Our picks are CPALL (sector’s best 4Q25F growth from more resilient CVS SSS and margin than other formats, up YoY & QoQ), HMPRO (sector’s highest dividend yield from operations, low 2Q26F sales base) and GLOBAL (low 1H26F sales base).

Key risks are changes in government policies and purchasing power. Key ESG risks are energy & waste management, sustainable products (E) and product quality management, labor practices and data privacy (S).
