Staples retailers to outperform discretionary
In 2M25, SSS is believed to have contracted 1.6% YoY (including leap day last year, which takes 1.7% YoY off SSS) from a rise of 0.2% YoY in 4Q24, with SSS growth at staples at 0.6% YoY and a contraction at discretionary of 5.5% YoY. We expect sector SSS to grow slightly in 2Q25F, without 1Q25’s hurt from leap day and E-Receipt (lower maximum spending and fewer spending days). SSS from staples is expected to continue to outperform discretionary from new government stimulus (the next phase of the digital wallet and “We Travel Together”) and more tourists, though purchasing power will remain fragile. We expect 2025F sector core earnings growth of 13%, with a slight 1.1% rise in SSS and continued store and margin expansion. Our picks are CPALL, CPAXT and BJC.
Slower-than-expected SSS in 1Q25TD, notably for discretionary. In 2M25, SSS is believed to have contracted 1.6% YoY (including leap day last year, which slices 1.7% off SSS YoY in 2M25) from +0.2% YoY in 4Q24. SSS at staples players is estimated to have risen 0.6% YoY (including leap day) boosted by more international and Thai tourists for all players and BJC’s change in strategy for fresh food sales. These outperformed SSS at discretionary, whose SSS fell 5.5% YoY (including leap day), hit by this year’s E-Receipt measure that cut maximum spending on general goods to Bt30,000 (from Bt50,000) and the fewer spending days at 44 (vs 46 in Jan-Feb 2024), plus low purchases from fragile consumption sentiment as well as from lower farm income and agricultural prices for major crops (paddy, sugarcane, cassava, and maize).
Slightly better SSS in 2Q25F. We expect sector SSS to grow slightly in 2Q25F without the effect of leap day (cut SSS by 1% YoY in 1Q25) and the E-Receipt measure in Jan-Feb 2025. We expect SSS from staples to further outperform discretionary, backed by new government stimulus (pending Cabinet approval) and stronger international and Thai tourists, though purchasing power will continue fragile. As for the new stimulus, we see little benefit to sector SSS from phase 3 of the digital wallet in late 2Q25F to early 3Q25F, which is going to 2.7mn people aged 16-20. It is budgeted at just Bt27bn compared to Bt145bn for phase 1 and Bt40bn for phase 2; the last portion of the digital wallet will be larger and have a greater effect on SSS as it is going to people aged 20-59, potentially in 3Q25F. The “We Travel Together” program is hoped to stimulate inter-regional travel during the low season from May to September. If approved, it will boost Thai tourists, directly benefiting staples retailers.
2025F growth and target prices. We expect sector core earnings to grow 12.9% in 2025F, boosted by SSS growth (+1.1%), store expansion (+3.6%, by numbers) and EBIT margin improvement (+30bps). To factor in our more conservative assumptions on LT growth rate and LT SSS growth to match the slower growth in Thai consumption, we revised down our end-2025 DCF-valuation-based target prices by 6% on average, with ratings for the companies under coverage unchanged.
Top picks: CPALL, CPAXT, and BJC. The sector has outperformed the SET by 6% over the past 30 days, led by staples retailers, whose SSS growth is higher than for discretionary. Share price outperformance for staples players should continue, in our view, in view of better earnings from more sales and better margin in 1H25F.
