3Q25: Missed on interest and tax expenses

BJC’s 3Q25 core profit was Bt628mn, -29% YoY and -45% QoQ, below estimates on interest and tax expenses. In 4Q25TD, SSS in the MSC unit has contracted by over 3% YoY (vs -3.8% YoY in 3Q25), with similar SSS growth in October (last year had a high base from the digital wallet) and November to date (weak purchasing power), amid continued hurt from store renovations (11 stores renovated since 3Q25 with plans for completion by late 4Q25F). We cut our 2025F by 9% on weaker SSS and higher interest expenses. We downgrade our rating to NEUTRAL from Outperform with a new mid-2026 DCF (WACC of 7% and LT growth of 1.5%) TP of Bt21 (from Bt22).

3Q25 net profit was Bt637mn, -9% YoY and -36% QoQ, 5% below our estimate and 15% below consensus on interest and tax expenses. Excluding a Bt9mn one-off FX gain, 3Q25 core profit was Bt628mn, -29% YoY on lower sales, higher SG&A/sales, higher interest expense and effective tax rate and -45% QoQ on seasonality.

3Q25 sales. Sales fell 4% YoY on lower sales in all units except for CSC. MSC revenue declined 4% YoY on a contraction in SSS of 3.8% YoY (vs -3.2% YoY in 2Q25) from slower tourist arrivals, last year’s high sales base for non-food and dry food sales from the Bt10,000 cash handout under the digital wallet scheme on Sep 25-30, 2024 (-1% YoY off SSS) and the temporary effect of several large-scale renovations (-0.7% YoY off SSS). By sales mix, in 3Q25, fresh food SSS (19% of sales) was flat YoY (vs up in the high single digits YoY in 2Q25), while dry food SSS (69% of sales) and non-food sales (12% of sales) fell in the low single digits YoY and high teens YoY (unchanged from 2Q25). By format, hypermarket sales shrank 5% YoY, hurt by fewer tourists, no digital wallet and store renovations; supermarket sales grew 1% YoY, and Big C Mini sales were flat YoY. In 3Q25, it opened four Big C Hong Kong stores and a Big C Food Service store. It closed a Big C hypermarket and a Big C Food Service store and closed 106 Big C Mini stores (net of openings). PSC revenue fell 4% YoY on lower glass packaging sales (-9% YoY) from lower average selling prices, with declining raw material costs and softer beverage demand and export sales outpacing better aluminum can packaging sales (+2% YoY) on better sales in Vietnam, particularly in the beer and energy drink categories. H&TSC revenue fell 16% YoY from lower sales after the divestment of Thai-Scandic Steel Co., Ltd (-4% YoY off sales) and last year’s high base from government disbursement. CSC revenue grew 5% YoY on robust growth in the food & non-food segment, particularly in snack and tissue paper products.

3Q25 other items. Gross margin widened 20bps YoY in the non-MSC unit. MSC margin narrowed 30bps YoY on a change in sales mix (last year had a high base in high-margin non-food sales) and more price investment to boost sales. PSC margin widened 120bps YoY from lower soda ash, cullet, and natural gas cost plus operational efficiency in the glass packaging business. CSC and H&TSC margin widened 10bps YoY and 410bps YoY from a more favorable product mix. EBIT margin fell 60bps YoY on higher SG&A/sales (+70bps YoY from a lower reduction in SG&A of -1% YoY than in sales at -4% YoY), amid lower rental and other income (-5% YoY) with a lower rental rate from a less favorable tenant mix and disruption from renovations that beat down the higher occupancy rate of 90.9% (vs 87.9% in 3Q24). Interest expenses grew 6% QoQ from a higher rate on the lease for a new distribution center and negative carrying cost from the issuance of new debentures for debt refinancing. Effective tax rate was 24% (vs 22% in 3Q24).

Key risks are changes in purchasing power, an inflation-led rise in costs and higher interest rate and new government policies. Key ESG risks are energy management, sustainable products (E), and labor/employment practices (S).
