BEM reported 4Q24 net profit of Bt851mn, falling 1% YoY and 20.3% QoQ, 5.4% below INVX and 8.4% below consensus on higher-than-expected SG&A. In 2025F, we expect earnings to grow 13.3% to Bt4.3bn, supported by 1.1% growth in expressway traffic and 7.5% growth in MRT ridership. BEM will also get the full-year benefit of the July 2024 MRT fare price hike. We maintain OUTPERFORM with an SOTP-based TP of Bt10.5 (Bt8.2 for the core business, Bt1.5 for the Orange Line and Bt0.8 for investment in TTW and CKP). We like BEM for its steady earnings growth; it also has potential upside from the double deck project, not yet in our forecast. Management expects a conclusion this year.
4Q24 net profit slightly below estimates on SG&A. BEM reported 4Q24 net profit of Bt851mn, down 1% YoY and 20.3% QoQ and 5.4% below INVX and 8.4% below consensus. The key miss was higher SG&A than expected. Total revenue was Bt4.4bn, up 4.3% YoY, but flat QoQ. Revenue from expressway (52% of total revenue) was Bt2.3bn, down 0.3% YoY and 1% QoQ on lower traffic and higher number of free days. MRT revenue (40% of total revenue) was Bt1.8bn, growing 8.5% YoY on higher ridership, but slipping 1.3% QoQ on seasonality since there were more holidays. Commercial development revenue (8% of total revenue) was Bt355mn, up 16% YoY and 15.3% QoQ. For the year 2024, BEM reported net profit of Bt3.8bn (+8%), in line with our forecast. The company announced a DPS of Bt0.15. XD will be on Mar 11.
Traffic updates. In 2024, average expressway traffic was 1.1mn trips/day, flat YoY. Traffic was impeded by partial disclosure of its expressway network from May 2024, which is scheduled to run until May 2025. In Jan 2025, average traffic was 1.1mn trips/day, slipping 0.9% YoY and 1.6% MoM. Adding to the partial closure of the expressway network, the PM 2.5 issue led some schools to close and go online during the month. In 2025F, we expect expressway traffic to grow by 1.1%. Average ridership on the MRT (Blue Line) in 2024 was 426.9k trips/day, growing 9.4% YoY. In Jan 2025, average ridership was 481.4k trips/day, increasing 13.9% YoY and 12% MoM, both due to seven days of free rides ordered by the government (Jan 25-31) because of the air quality issue. Farebox revenue in this period will be calculated from revenue during Jan 18-24.
Keep 2025F forecast. We keep our 2025F earnings at Bt4.3bn, growing 12.9%. Our assumptions are based on 1.1% growth in average daily expressway traffic, improving from no growth in 2024 based on an anticipated reopening of its entire expressway network in May 2025. We expect average daily MRT ridership (Blue Line) to grow 7.5% plus there will be the boost from a full year of the higher fares that took effect in Jul 2024.
Risks and concerns. Key concerns are the recovery of expressway traffic and MRT ridership. Key ESG risk for BEM is travel safety. A perception of lack of safety would reduce the number of people using expressways and the MRT. This would lead to downside to our earnings forecast.
