Lacks catalysts and still pressured

Market today

The SET is expected to continue weakening as the Fed official’s opinion led to uncertainty about a cut in interest rate. The index has next supports at 1390 and 1380, which are expected to be a turning point. The upper bound is limited at resistance at 1411 and a break above this would be a good indicator of recovery with the next resistance at 1420.

Today’s highlights

• Christopher Waller, a member of the Fed Board of Governors, said the Fed is likely to reduce interest rates this year, but very cautiously and not as rapid as the market hopes.
• AAPL stock price fell by 1.2%DoD after it announced a price cut for the iPhone 15 in China, highlighting the steady decline in iPhone demand in the Chinese market.
• The Cabinet approved a reduction in the excise tax rate on diesel and similar fuels by ~Bt1/liter, capping the price at Bt30/liter until after the Songkran festival, from Jan 20 to Apr 19, 2024.
• The ERC notes the private sector's request for electricity cost of Bt3.60/unit, with Bt3.00/unit for the long term difficult due to the new structure allowing only Bt4.20/unit. There are concerns about the EGAT's cumulative debt of over Bt100bn.
• The Department of Medical Sciences reported it has seen 40 cases of the new COVID-19 variant JN.1, first identified in October 2023, and believes it may become the dominant strain, replacing XBB.1.9.2.
• The Bangkok Metropolitan Council meets today and will discuss the payment of Bt23bn debt for the E&M work on the Green Line extension to BTS. If approved, it could push BTS's stock price up in the short term, but speculation should be cautious as fundamentals are unchanged.
• TU announced the divestment of Red Lobster and expects to record a one-time non-cash impairment charge of ~Bt18.5 bn in 4Q23. The company also announced a share buyback plan for up to Bt3.6bn, not exceeding 200mn shares (4.3% of total shares), between Feb 20 and Jun 30, 2024.

Strategy today

In the short term the Thai stock market is expected to be pressured by external factors, including gloomy economic figures from China’s 4Q23 GDP and US retail sales and existing home sales. However, there are hopes for stimulus packages in China and a cut in interest rate by the Fed that may reduce pressure somewhat; the market lacks new domestic catalysts. Our strategy is selective buy.

Trading today

Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to be pressured by gloomy China and US economic figures, although there are hopes for stimulus packages in China and a cut in interest rate by the Fed, which may reduce the pressure. We recommend “selective buy” in themes with specific drivers:
1) Stocks whose prices are still laggard and have underperformed the SET since the beginning of 2023, resulting in a 2024 PER and PBV lower than 5-year average, with good profit expected in 2024 and interesting upside to prices – AOT, BEM, HMPRO, GULF and ZEN.
2) Stocks benefiting from the Easy e-Receipt measure allowing a personal income tax deduction on purchases of up to Bt50,000 between Jan 1–Feb 15, 2024 – CRC, MINT and ADVANC.
3) For investors who want to play on dividend yield of above 5% on 2023 profit (after interim dividend) and XD between Apr-May 2024 – AP, TISCO and KTB.
In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG).

Daily top picks

AOT: The stock currently is trading at a PEG of 0.2x, lower than the average of 0.3x for regional peers, while profit is moving up strongly. 1QFY24 core profit (Oct–Dec 2024) is estimated at Bt5.6bn, a sharp jump YoY and up 54%QoQ, backed by a return in international passenger arrivals to 16.9mn (+54%YoY and +13%QoQ).
BDMS: The company will benefit most in its sector from long-term growth in the EEC. 4Q23 core profit is expected to grow YoY, pulling 2023 profit up 12%; 2024 profit is expected to grow 8% on growing foreign patient services, higher revenue from excellence centers and greater asset utilization.
